ES the Lakeview Lakers in the first round of the 2012 Classic. The Chargers con- trolled the Lakers for a majority of the first half, leading the from the tip to the buzzer. WWG took advantage of several fast break baskets and numerous Lakeview fouls to lead 32-24 at halflime. In the half the Chargers covered 17 of 25 free throw attempts and put seven players in the scoring column, led by Shane Buchman's nine first half points. The Lakers forced WWG into a series of early second half tum- overs and tied the game just four minutes into the sec- ond half. Following a Charger timeout, WWG was a able to regain the lead until the Lakers once again tied the score with 6:35 to play. Lakeview had just one lead (54-51) in the game's first 35 minutes, but that lead was short lived as the Chargers got a three pointer from Alex Knutson to tie the game on the next possession. The Lakers took their second lead at 61-60 and again at 63-62 inside the final minute of play. When the Chargers scoring chance came up short, with 6.2 seconds to play, the Lakers converted both free attempts and held a a 65-62 lead. Following the free throws the Chargers rushed the ball up the floor and found Taylor Lindaman in the comer for a game tying, buzzer beating three point shot. Lindaman's three point bomb sent the game to overtime and once again the Chargers found themselves trailing as Lakeview struck first with a three point shot of their own. WWG answered with a three pointer from Buchman and then proceeded to outscore the Lakers 12-3 in the final two minutes of overtime to secure the victory and a place in the Candy Cane championship for the third straight year. Buchman led all scorers with 25 points off the bench. Lindaman added 20 points, including 9-9 from the charity stripe. Knutson 12, Aaron Hass 10, Matt Otto 5, Andy Merrick 4, and Reed Bakken 4 rounded out the scoring for WWG. The Chargers made 34-50 free attempts in the game, compared to just 12-24 for Lakeview. SWU 69 VfWG 53 The next night the Chargers faced host Southwestern United in the championship game. This was the third consecutive year and five of the last six years the two teams battled in the championship game. SWU was a 61-36 winner over Lincoln Hi in the first round. The Chargers bolted out of the gate and took a quick 7-0 lead, only to see the Wildcats put together a 9-2 run and tie the game at 9-9. WWG maintained a small lead for most of the first half, but SWU used another 9-2 run at the end of the half to take a 32-29 lead into the break. The Chargers were unable to regain the lead in the second half as SWU made a handful of timely three point shots to keep the Chargers in the rear view mirror. WWG got as close as 56-50 with just under 5:00 to play, but struggled to score in the game's final minutes as SWU gradually pulled away for a 69-53 victory. The 13-3 stretch was the third such run that the Wildcats were able to put together in the game to take home their third straight championship victory over the Chargers. WWG again shot well from the free throw line, making 21-29 attempts. The Chargers however, strug- gled to covert from short range and made only 10 two point shots in the game. WWG was led by Alex Knutson's 23 points. Knutson added a handful of steals and four assists. Lindaman and Buchman, who were named to the All- Tournament team, added ten points each. Matt Otto 6, Brody Williams 2, and Aaron Hass 2 rounded out the scoring for WWG.
