But thousands of MN homes have potential- ly harmful levels of radon gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. That is why Redwood and Renville County Public Health Services has joined the MN Department of Health (MDH) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in an effort to inform Americans about the dangers of radon exposure and the need to identify and fix radon problems in their homes. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that is harmlessly dis- persed in outdoor air, but when trapped in buildings, can be harmful at elevated levels. Redwood and Renville Counties showed high levels, with 61% of the 124 homes testing above the recommended value last year. This compares to ele - vated levels in about 35 per- cent of MN homes, and only 7 percent of homes national- ly. Major studies have indicated that exposure to elevated levels of radon causes lung cancer in humans. "Because you can't see or smell radon, people tend to minimize the health effects and ignore the possi- bility that it might exist at elevated levels in their homes," stated Jill Bruns, Director of Renville county Public Health. There are no immediate symptoms. It may take 5 to 25 years for lung cancer to develop after exposure. People that smoke have a greater incidence of radon-induced lung cancer. There are no other respirato- ry problems, like asthma, linked to radon. And chil- dren and adults are equally at risk to the radioactive gas. Using simple and inex- pensive kits, homeowners can test for the presence of radon in their homes and, if it is present, take steps to fix the problem. Radon test kits are available at the county health departments and hardware stores. Many are priced under $20. "Radon is a serious public health haz- ard," Bruns said, "but it has a straightfbrward solution: Test your home and take action, if necessary, to ,keep radon out." For more information on radon, radon testing, and radon mitigation, call MDH at 1-800-798-9050 or Renville county Public Health Services at 320-523- 2570.
