Many of my readers can no doubt quote this psalm. It is often used at a time of sorrow, and has brought tremendous comfort to the children of God down through the ages. We are going to approach the psalm from the shepherd's viewpoint, using some thoughts from "A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23," by Phillip Keller, who was himself a shepherd. We will do this because Psalm 23 was in fact written by David, a young shepherd boy. The words and messages of this poem spring from his actual experience watching his father's sheep. God is often pictured in the Bible as a Shepherd and His people as sheep. Let us take a close look at Psalm 23 and see if we can have an even more clear understanding of what it meant to its first hearers, and what it can mean to our souls. The LORD is my shepherd. What a statement! David knew from first-hand experience the role of shepherd and sheep. Yet, though he was a shepherd, he is speaking here as a sheep. He uses the term LORD, which refers to Jehovah. This is the special personal name of God that speaks of His promises. Jesus is Jehovah, God incarnate among us--/am the good Shepherd (John 10:11). The relationship that we can have to God as a sheep to a Shepherd came from the mind of God. How comforting it is that God cares about me and wants to care for me as a shepherd does for his sheep. This should bring great joy to my soul! Just like a sheep, I am weak, defenseless, and often foolish. I need a Shepherd. What reasons could I give for boldly claiming the LORD as my Shepherd? The first would be creation--He deliberately chose to create me. When I look up into the night sky and realize that there are billions of stars, each created by God and named by Him, I am humbled. When I lift a handful of dirt, and realize that it teems with millions of organisms, all created and directed by the same God, I fall before Him in wonder and amazement. He created me and cares for me! Second, I can call Him my Shepherd because of redemp- tion-He bought me with the incredible price of His own blood. He is entitled to say: Iam the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep (Jn 10:11). He absorbed the penalty for my rebellion---a//we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way, and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Is 53:6). As a ten-year old lad, realizing my sinfulness and need of a Savior, I looked to the Lamb of God in faith and was given the girl of redemption. Third, Jesus is my Shepherd because of His care--He lays Himself out for me continually. Sheep, more than any other class of livestock, require endless attention and meticulous care. The shepherd has to give himself daily for the sheep, as those who raise sheep in our area know only too well. Jesus is a gentle, true, yet stem Shepherd who cares for His sheep. David is able tosay with confidence--the Lord is m..y shep- herd! This is in the present tense so it is a continuous relation- ship. How sad that so many around us do not know the care of the Good Shepherd. Do you have the joy of knowing the Lord Jesus as your Shepherd? www.ibcwestbrook.org Postcards on Pioneer Pioneer Public Television is proud to premiere the next episode of Postcards on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. with "Music & Dance".
