Jesus used the Greek letters rather than the Hebrew because the book of Revelation was written to an audience of Jew and Gentile, not all of whom would have known Hebrew, but most of whom would have been familiar with the Greek lan- guage which was spoken in the Roman world. What does our Lord mean by referring to Himself as the Alpha and Omega? The text makes it clear He is the beginning and the ending, or, the Originator and the Finisher. We will look today at three spheres in which this applies to the Lord Jesus Christ. The first sphere is eterni- ty. For unto us is child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder," and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Please note that Jesus is referred to as the Everlasting Father. Literally, He is the Father of Eternity, the originator or creator of eternity. Paul tells us that He is before all things, and by Him all things cohere (Colossians 1:17). Our fmite minds cannot comprehend eternity. The Lord Jesus Christ did not have a begin- ning, and He will not have an ending. He has always been and will never cease to exist The second sphere is Creation. Jesus is the begin- ner and the finisher of Creation. Once again, Paul writes: For by Him all things were created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or domin- ions, or rulers, orpowers: all things were created by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). Jesus conceived the created universe. His imagi- nation produced the platypus, zebra, giraffe, tree sloth, snow, ice, fog, oceans, des- erts, DNA, the consistent orbit of the heavenly bodies, etc. He created the universe by the word of His mouth, and one day He will destroy it. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements (the atomic structure) shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up (2 Peter 3:10). Yet, He also will re-create it. Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness (2 Peter 3:13). Jesus Christ is in total control of this world. The third sphere is redemption. He is referred to as the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). The only hope we have of forgiveness of sin and deliv- erance from hell is because of the work that the Lord Jesus accomplished and fin- ished on the cross of Calvary. He died in our place and rose from the dead. Do you know this wonderful God, Jesus Christ, who is the Beginning and Ending of eternity, cre- ation and redemption? www. ibcwestbrook.org Greenwood Nursery "Most complete Garden & Landscape Center in S.W.
