Sunday, March 3 Pause II | • and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams The Valley of the Shadow of Death Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;for thou art with me (Psalm 23:4a). In the first three verses of this psalm, the sheep have been on the home range. We have seen that the shepherd provides rest, refreshment, restoration, and replenishment. Green pas- tures, still waters, and right paths are in abundance. In the next three verses, the sheep will be taken to the sum- mer range. It will be necessary for them to travel through some dark valleys in order to get to the the foliage on the mountain mesas or tablelands. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. From a shepherd's point of view, this marks the halfway stage of the psalm. Most efficient sheepmen in the Bible lands endeavor to take their flocks into distant ranges during the summer. This involves long drives. The shepherd however does not take the sheep where he has not gone on before. In late spring, as the snows recede on the mountaintops, the shep- herd takes his sheep up to alpine meadows. As autumn approaches, the coming snows force the flock to withdraw back to the lower elevations. They come back to the home ranch for the winter. The way to the tablelands must go through the valleys. It is a way of danger with rock-slides, predators, and bad weather. But it is also the best way for it has water, foliage and a gentle grade. The dark valley represents any difficult experience of life that we might go through. We do not need to fear as we approach the valleys of life, even death itself, because the Lord is with the believer. But note that for the believer, it is the shadow of death--the sting has been removed and only the shadow remains. I will fear no evil--we see in these verses grandeur, quiet- ness, and assurance. There are many evils along the journey as noted. We do not need to fear any of them. We do not even need to fear the Evil One. Why? Thou art with me. During this time the flock is entirely alone with the shepherd. The intimate language of these verses displays this relationship. There are three reasons why the shepherd needs to take the sheep through the valleys. It is the best way. We might think that our way seems terribly tough, but in the end it is the best way to get to higher ground. Even the valley of death opens unto an eternity of delight with God! It is the way with the most water. Sooner or later the Christian discovers that it is in the valley of his life that he finds refreshment from God Himself. Water can flow only in a ditch, channel, or valley; so the life of God can only flow in blessing through the valleys that have been carved in our lives by excruciating experiences. It is the way with the best forage. The shepherd does not hurry his flock. There are lambs that have never been along this way. They must take it slow to drink and feed where water and food are available. The shepherd knows what dangers lurk in the dark valleys. In spite of these hazards, he knows that this is still the best way to reach the high country. He is ever watchful, looking to take his flock into safe cover. Our Shepherd knows all this when He leads us through the valleys. He knows where we can find strength and sustenance despite the threats of disaster about us. There are going to be valleys in life for every believer. How we react to them makes all the difference. www.ibcwestbrook.org 0 0 • • • • • • • • • • • 0 0 • Sentinel Tribune Tip Line • Coffee hour 9:00 a.m. Bible study 9:00 a.m. Mass 8:30 a.m. The Compassionate Sunday school 9:00 a.m. Soup supper 5:30 p.m. Friends • a story idea call Our News Tip Worship 10:00 a.m. Lenten worship 6:30 p.m. OUR SAVIOR'S Monthly meetings are on • Line.
