Due to good weather, and more importantly an increase in habitat, pheasant popula- tions are on the increase and pheasant hunters were able to reap a bountiful harvest last season. With the mild weather so far this winter. pheasants and other wildlife have been able to survive in good numbers. This news bodes well for the local econ- oms; various wildlife species. and the avid outdoors per- son. The Redwood County Chapter of Pheasants Forever is dedicated to improving habitat so that pheasants will remain an important part of our areas farmlands. To that end they offer the following tips for those interested in improv- ing their land for pheasants: * Restore wetlands and grasslands through conser- vation programs such as the continuous CRP sign-up. * Leave 1 -2 acre food plots of corn adjacent to cat- tail sloughs and thick groves. * Delay mowing road- side ditches until after the peak hatching season, usual- ly after mid July. * Remove tall trees from grasslands where they might become perches for hawks and owls. * Support the Redwood Co. Pheasants Forever chap- ter by attending their ban- quet March 13 at the Redwood Community Center. Contact Wally Bernhardson at 637-8575 for tickets.
