A May 25, 2013 wedding is planned in Brandon, SD. Walnut Grove Ecumenical Good Friday Choir Capture the inspiration... "God So Loved the World," "When You Prayed Beneath Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me (Psalm 23:4b). We have seen the shepherd provide, protect, and propel. Now we see that he also punishes. A shepherd carries a mini- mum of equipment. In the Middle East a shepherd carries only a rod and staff. The rod is made from a young sapling. The knob where the trunk meets the roots is shaped into a smooth rounded head. The rest is whittled with care and patience. It becomes an extension of the owner's right arm. He doesn't go anywhere without it. It is a symbol of authority and strength, and is used to discipline and correct. A westem American shepherd uses a gun, which has been called a rod. The rod is a picture of God's Word, and serves several func- tions. It brings consolation. When it sees the rod, the sheep knows that the shepherd is in control. It also brings discipline. The shepherd from a youth learns to throw the rod with great accuracy. Many a wayward sheep has felt the sting of the rod to bring it scurrying back to the fold. The rod is used to examine. We have heard the phrase, 'passing under the rod' A shepherd uses the rod to count the sheep at day's end, and to give close examination to each one. He can look closely at the wool and the skin. In effect, the sheep is not able to 'pull the wool over the shepherd's eyes.' Lastly, it is used to protect. It drives off predators and dis- courages snakes. David killed a lion and a bear with his rod. God's Word, the sword of the Spirit, does these same things for the believer. It brings consolation (Ps 34:8), discipline (Ps 119:9, 11), examination of the heart, (Ps 119:23, 23), and pro- tection (Eph 6:17). Just as the rod never leaves the hand of the shepherd, the believer needs to have the Word always at hand. The staff is the symbol of the shepherd. The long, slender piece of wood with the crook at the end is used only with sheep and no other animal. It is a symbol of concern; it speaks of the shepherd's kindness. It is a picture of the Holy Spirit. It also serves several purposes. It draws the sheep together for intimacy. Ewes are often separated from their lambs. The shepherd can pick up a lamb and bring it back to its ewe. It draws the sheep together for examination. The crook draws the sheep to the shepherd so that it can be examined with the rod. It rescues the sheep. With the crook the shepherd is able to reach the sheep when it is caught in a bush. Finally, it guides the sheep. The shepherd gently lays the staffagainst the side of the sheep, guiding it to the path it ought to travel. A wayward sheep, caught in a thicket, can only be loosed by the shepherd's staff. The shepherd, especially an older man, leans upon it for comfort.
