Poet Wang Ping to read at SMSU Chinese-American poet Wang Ping will read from her work at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 18 in Charter Hall 201 on the campus of SMSU. Wang Ping teaches cre- ative writing at Macalester College in St. Paul. She writes poetry, stories, novels and non-fiction. Her books include a collection of short stories, American Visa; a novel, Foreign Devil; and two books of poetry, Of Flesh and Spirit and New Generation: Poetry from China Today, an anthology of contemporary Chinese poet- ry Ping edited and co-trans- lated. Her latest prose book is entitled Aching for Beauty: Footbinding in China, and is a cultural study of the Chinese practice that lasted for a thousand years. She has been nominated for a MN Book Award for her most recent collection of poems, The Magic Whip. The Library Journal says of the collection, "Probing oppression, exile, and the loss of the mother tongue, these candid poems advocate equality and cultural diver- sity." Ping said she likes to explore and play between the two cultures - China and the U.S. - as well as build bridges. She was born in Shanghai, China, and came to New York in 1985. She is the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts and New York State Council for the Arts grants for her poetry and transla- tions.
