Have a great week and remember that Spring is just around the comer!!! Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams A Prepared Table You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies (Psalm 23:5a). What have we learned so far as we have considered this pre- cious psalm of David? The LORD is my Shepherd--the Lord Jesus is the Good Shepherd. I shall not want--He meets my every need. He makes me to lie down in green pastures---He takes away fear and famine so I can eat in peace. He leads my beside the still waters--I would not fred the refreshing quiet water if He had not led me there. He restores my soul--when I fall and cannot arise, He gently and sternly sets me aright. Yeah, though 1walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;for thou art with me. The dark valley rep- resents any difficult experience of life that I might go through. The shepherd takes the sheep through the dark valleys becausse it is the best way to get to the top; it is the way with the most water and forage. I will fear no evil--I am calm, reposed, trusting, and safe. For thou art with me--what sweetness it is to know that the Lord is with met Your rod andyour staffthey comfort me--the shepherd uses these dual instruments to guide, protect, and discipline. They are representative of the Word of God and the Spirit of God in the life of the believer. The sheep are in the pasture on the home range in verses 1-3. The shepherd supplies their every need. They are in the valley in verse 4. While danger is all around them, the shep- herd keeps them serene. Now in the last verses of the psalm, the sheep are going to the summer range. You prepare a table before me in the presence of thy ene- mies. One immediately thinks of a lovely dinner table set with the fmest china and silverware. This is not what David is pre- senting. Rather, he is talking about the high mountain country of the summer ranges, often called tablelands, or mesas (the Spanish word for table being mesa). In the early spring, the shepherd will go alone into the highlands to prepare a place for the sheep to graze. This involves much time and effort on the part of the shepherd in behalf of the sheep. Though these tablelands are remote, the owner takes several trips to ready them for the sheep in the summer months. He is preparing these tables in several ways. He finds the best places to camp and to graze. He looks for poisonous plants and removes them. He looks for the tracks and spoor of predators (wolves, coyotes, cougars, and bears). He clears out the water holes--this will involve removing brush that has clogged the drinking places, and repairing dams. Each of these things is a picture of what our Lord Jesus has done for us. He went to Calvary, dying in our place. He is wonderful Savior. He has gone before us in this life, tasting its bitterness. He is a wonderful High Priest. He has gone to heaven, preparing a place for us. He is a wonderful King. He wants us to have life, and have it more abundantly--He is the Good Shepherd who has given His life for the sheep. No earthly shepherd could be as good, kind, and sacrificial as the Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know Him? If you do not, you can turn to Him in repentance and faith, and He will receive you, just as you are. w.ibcwestbrook.org CLUB NOTES TOPS WESTBROOK -- TOPS Club No. 1336 meets at Grace Lutheran Church, Westbrook, on Monday.
