(e-mail news must be submitted before noon on Monday) I I By Pastor Rob Adams My Cup Runs Over You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over (Psalm 23:5b). The sheep, having been taken to the high table-lands pre- pared by their shepherd, are now in a sublime setting with clear running springs, fresh forage, andclose contact with the shep- herd. However, there is a 'fly in the ointment.' Actually sev- eral problems can come in the idyllic summertime. First, there are flies. Parasites trouble the flock and make their lives a misery: warble, bot, heel, deer, and black flies. But above all, the trouble is nasal flies. They get into the nose and lay their eggs. The larvae hatch and make their way up the nasal passages to the head. They cause such discomfort that the sheep will beat their heads against anything. They stamp their feet, run wildly, and hide in the brush, unable to eat. They have even been known to kill themselves for relief. The solution is for the shepherd, at the very first sign of these flies, to apply an antidote to their heads. It is usually something like a combination of linseed oil, sulphur, and tar. Once applied, the change is instantaneous. The sheep are quiet and content. These flies speak of the petty annoyances that we allow to ruin our repose. The believer needs to learn to give every little thing to the Lord, not making 'mountains out of molehills.' The second problem is scab. A microscopic parasite causes scab, which spreads rapidly by contact. Sheep love to rub against each other, and it doesn't take long for it to spread. When the Scripture speaks of a lamb without blemish, it is referring to something like this scab. The same solution is needed, except in this case the entire body needs the ointment. The most difficult part is the head, but it must be anointed. The shepherd uses a dipping tank, at great expense, time, and labor--but it is worth it. Scab is a picture of of sin, which is often spread by our contacts with others. Teens especially need to be mindful of peer pressure. Anyone can be influenced by the carnality of others, or by the mass media of our day. The third problem is rut. As fall approaches, mating season begins. The necks of the rams grow http_ ://us.mg4.mail.yahoo. com/dc/launch?.gx=l&.rand=30e09c91131bl# stronger, and they begin to strut proudly. They fight furiously by crashing their heads into one another. The shepherd can minimize the harm that this causes by catching the rams early on and smear- ing their heads with grease. When they knock into each other, they glance off comically. Sadly, many people have quit going to a good Bible preach- ing church, or have quit serving in the church, because they have been hurt. Some past rivalry or painful experience has kept them from vibrant service for the Lord. And yet, Christians should be known as the most contented people on earth. What is the spiritual answer to these things? In each case, it is the Holy Spirit. He lives within the believer, and He desires to fill, anoint, or control us daily. Paul tells us to continually befilled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18). This demands a daily con- fession of sin and a fresh yielding of ourselves to His control. Only then, can you say: My cup runs over. Not only will you have enough, but more than enough to share with others. You are full, even to excess. This abundance must be seen and shared with other believers and the lost sheep around you. www.ibcwesthrook.org CLUB NOTES TOPS WESTBROOK -- TOPS Club No. 1336 meets at Grace Lutheran Church, Westbrook, on Monday.
