It is imperative that officers keep close track of each other as they move through a build- ing. Deputy Evers demonstrated dif- ferent ways of clearing areas using two or more people. He said, "always cover your back." He showed the way to use a back to back method, and a leap frog method of clearing areas as they go. He recommended to not always stay to close to walls, to avoid being hit by ricochet shots. Again he emphasized covering your back saying, "if you are not covering your back you are asking for trouble." In Active Shooter situations it is paramount to get to the shooter as quickly as possible. The group also practiced the vari- ous ways to safely clear areas like class rooms, and how to enter them with the least amount of risk. Shooters prior to doing case scenarios. In most cases, depending how quickly officers arrive, they will hear the shooting and go to the noise but still using caution in case there is a second shooter involved. In situations like this there are no hard fast rules, that is when officers have to rely on their training and use common sense. After reviewing the initial training the group worked on various sce- narios using their train- ing guns and equipment. The training is very important in a rural area where it could be a half hour or more before a significant amount of law enforcement would don their safety equipment arrive.
