We come now to our last study of this precious psalm. David has looked at life from the perspective of a sheep having an excellent shepherd. His own experience as a shepherd tend- ing his father's sheep in his youth sets the background for the psalm. Using this as a reference point, David was able to see how the LORD had been a Good Shepherd to him all his life. He has provided food and water aplenty. The rod and staff have protected him from predators, disease, and flock in- fighting. He has had no fear with the Great Shepherd at his side. As David looked back over his life, despite his sins and failures, the Lord has showered him with goodness and mercy. And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever The house of the LORD does not refer to a house of worship. Rather, it is speaking of the home ranch, and of the entire household--sheep, Shepherd, and servants. Fall has come, and the sheep have left the tablelands to return to the home ranch. As the sheep look back over the entire year cycle, they realize how good the Shepherd has been to them. They have no desire to leave this pleasant place and the tender care of the Good Shepherd. Likewise, the Shepherd is totally satisfied with the sheep. Healthy, contented, productive sheep are His delight. Other neighboring sheep may desire to come through the fence and join in this happy situation. They look longingly at this pleasant place. Should they try to get through or around the fence, it will be disastrous. They will gorge themselves and be unable to digest the rich forage. It is a double sadness, for if they stay where they are, they will die also. They have a love- less taskmaster, who does not care for his sheep. There is only one legitimate way into the pleasant sheepfold, and that is for the Shepherd to let them in. Jesus said: I am the door of the sheep. By me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture (John 10:9). Only the true sheep belong in the sheepfold. Anyone who knows the Lord would be proud to belong to this Shepherd. Believers should delight in telling others of how He has led them through shadows of death. We should be eager to tell of our confidence in Him. And l shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever This has three applications. The first is eternal security. Once a person becomes a sheep of the Shepherd by receiving the gift of eter- nal life, he is always His sheep (John 10:27-29). The second application is God's continual presence. He abides with the believer through the vehicle of His Holy Spirit. This is an eternal relationship, and the born-again one should live in the light of His presence. Respond to Him; move in harmony with His wishes. Only then wilt you discover that life is satisfying and worthwhile. The third application is the one to which we are most drawn--a heavenly home. One day, the believer will forever be with the Lord, in His very presence. It will be without end. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and lead them to living fountains of waters; and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes (Rev 7:17). Bless His name! My hope is that the next time you read or quote Psalm 23, you will be able to understand a little more of the richness of this song. More than this though, I hope that you truly know the Good Shepherd.
