CLASSIFIED ADS CALL 274-6136 OR 1-800-41 O- 1859 Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams The Light Then Jesus spoke unto them again, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows after me shall not walk in darkness. but shall have the light of life (John 8:12). No doubt we are all thankful for the lights in our homes, for when the power goes out, we surely miss the light. The Bible uses light as an illustration for God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures, the saints, and even Satan. Today we will look at Jesus, the Light. This is a broad topic that encompasses many verses for Jesus is the Light in five ways: First, Jesus is Light. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness does not comprehend (or overcome) it; that was the true light that lightens every man that comes into the worm (John 1:4, 5, 9). He is the source of all light. Without Jesus Christ, there would be no light in this dark world. Second, Jesus lights every man that comes into the world. He imparts to every man the instincts, intellectual faculties, conscience, knowledge of God, and a yearning for God. The tragedy is that the darkness does not understand, or overcome the light. Cain had enough light to offer sacrifices, though of his own choosing and not God's design. After Judas betrayed the Savior, there was enough light in him to see the tragedy of his foul deed. Third, Jesus is the Light of the World. This claim implies that Jesus is Light in relation to the souls of men everywhere just as the sun is in relation to the material world. Jesus came into the world to reveal many things. These include: God's true character (Jn 17:6), man's sin (Luke 5:8), the beauty of holiness (1 Peter 2:21, 22), and the way of salvation (Jn 3:16; 36). In contrast, the state of man is described as that of dark- ness: our understanding is darkened (Eph 4:18), and we are under thepower of darkness (Col 1:13). Man cannot come to God on his own, though he has the light of conscience and the light of Creation. These can point him to God, but only Christ, the Light can save. Furthermore, Jesus is the Light of the Gentiles. I will also give you for a light to the Gentiles, that you may be my salva- tion unto the end of the earth. (Isaiah 49:6). When Simeon saw the young child Jesus, he declared that He had fulfilled this prophecy: For my eyes have seen thy salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel (Luke 2:30- 32). The gospel in our day is to be given to Jew and Gentile alike. Finally, Jesus is Everlasting Light. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light (Is 60:19, 20). There will be no need of sun or moon in the eternal kingdom. And with everlast- ing light comes everlasting joy! (Is 6:20) If you do not know the Light, the words of of the old hymn are needful: 'Ye dwellers in darkness, with sin-blinded eyes, the Light of the world is Jesus. Go, wash at His bidding, and light will arise; the Light of the world is Jesus.' Those who know the Lord may best remember the words from one of David's most comforting Psalms: The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps 27:1) www.ibcwestbrook.org Grace Lutheran to Host Easter Vigil Grace Lutheran Church of Belview, MN is hosting a special Easter Vigil service on Saturday, April 7, begin- ning at 7 p.m. The Easter Vigil, which is an ancient Easter service that begins around a bonfire and then transitions from dark- ness to light, illustrating Christ's passage from death to resurrection, is receiving an updated look at Grace. "We'll have dancers. And bells. And a chocolate foun- tain!" said the church's pas- tor, Rev. Pad Bailey. "A tradi- tional portion of the Vigil is the reading of stories of our salvation history. In its fullest form, the Vigil contains 12 readings, but we'll be doing 5. Each story will be illus- trated by actors or dancers, or done as a dramatic reading." In addition to Grace Lutheran, clergy or musicians from churches in Evan, Morgan, Sacred Heart, Wabasso, Walnut Grove, Johnsonville and Porter will be involved. The Trinity Lutheran Choir from Walnut Grove will be singing, and the Grace Lutheran Band will also play. Pastor Dan Bowman of Rock Valle and Hawk Creek Lutheran Churches will preach. "It's the first service of Easter--we start in darkness with candles and move toward the light. We want people to know that it's a longer service than usual, but there isn't anything usual about it. Bonfire, dancers, kids in animal hats around an ark--this isn't an everyday service. There will be lots of movement and color." Despite the updates, por- tions of the service are very ancient. "I get to chant the most beautiful piece of prose ever written outside of Scripture. It is a proclamation of exultation and rejoicing around the Easter Candle, and churches have been using it on Easter Eve since the 5th century," she said. Bailey said that she believes that this is the most wonderful and important time of year for Christians, and that this ancient-yet-new Easter services lends itself to drama and beauty. "It illus- trates the excitement of Christ's resurrection and con- nects us with believers all over the world. It's my favor- ite worship experience of the whole year, especially when we fully transition to Easter, with banners and trumpets and alleluias." Everyone is invited to the service, Bailey said. And you don't want to be late---"if you're late, you miss the bon- fire and the candlelit proces- sion outside the church. Oh, and people should come pre- pared to get a little wet. And eat chocolate."
