SENTINEL TRIBUNE . 00rea F{00(:us Wednesday, April 7, 2004 In Defense of the English Language By Carolyn Van Loh Sentinel Tribune We'll begin with box; the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox is oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of mouse is not ever meese. You may find a lone mouse, or a whole nest of mice, But the plural of house is still never hice. If the plural of man is always men Why shouldn't the plu- ral of pan be pen? If I speak of a foot and you show me two feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth, and whole set are teeth Why shouldn't the plu- ral of booth be called beeth? If a singular this is a plural these Should the plural of kiss ever be keese? We speak of a brother and also of brethren, And though we say mother we never say methren. Then the masculine pronouns are he, his, and him, But imagine the femi- nine she, shis, and shim. Our language doesn't fit into a simple pattern with no surprises or chal- lenges. If it did, we would- n't need English grammar classes. Or even worse, there would be no need for English grammar teachers! I'm glad that I've been able Splish Splash These geese south of Westbrook took off across the slough when the photographer stopped to take their picture. Apparently they must have been camera shy.
