Johnstone, Wakeworld by Kerry Schafer, High Seduction by Vivian Arend, Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams David in Distress My heart is ftxed, 0 God, my heart is fixed," I will sing and give praise. (Psalm 57:7) David is hiding from King Saul in a cave. He knows that his cause is right, but the Lord has allowed him to go through this perilous experience. As noted last week, the psalm seems to cover one day in his life on the run. He is demonstrating to those who know and love the Lord that there are there are three things we need to do in times of trouble: pray to the Lord, praise Him, and exalt His name. Last week we considered verses 1-6 which express the idea of prayer. David cried to the Lord from his heart. He prayed for God's mercy and not for vengeance against his enemy. Though David was in dire straits, He saw God's protection as though it were eagle's wings. Scripture tells us elsewhere that He will guard His own like a mother hen guards her chicks. But we also need to praise the Lord. He is worthy of praise, even when we are at the bottom of a well, or in the depths of a cave. David's words should bring great assurance to those whose God is the Lord. My heart is fixed, 0 God, my heart is foced," I will sing and give praise. Awake psaltery and harp," 1 myself will awake early. I will praise you, 0 Lord, among the people; I will sing to you among the nations. For your mercy is great unto the heavens, and your truth unto the clouds (7-10). David began his day with praise. We would likely think that David would say, 'My heart is aflutter,' but no, it is fixed! His heart was fixed--not double-minded, or wobbly. Upon what is his heart fixed? The promises of God! He looks to them without wavering between doubt and faith. Further, David's heart is fixed in serving the LORD. David wanted his victory over the enemy to be a testimony among the nations. God's mercy and truth would be reflected unto the heavens. Surely this is so. The seasons never end (though at this writing there is still a whisper of snow on the ground), and the rainbow is the promise of God's mercy. Notice that God sent His mercy and truth down from the heavens, but they also reach UP to the clouds. There is plenty of both for everyone who will come in faith! Third, we are to exalt the Lord (11). Be Thou exalted, 0 God, above the heavens; let your glory be above all the earth. David begins and ends his day with praise to the LORD. He wanted the LORD to be exalted through his life, no matter what happened in his encounters with King Saul. All that we do should be to the glory of God. God's mercy and truth may be reflected in the heavens, but his praise should rise above the heavens. David asked for mercy, and God sent along truth as well. It is as though he ends his day with a prayer of praise. "Calamities are a matter of time, but our safety is a matter of eternity." (C S Spurgeon). David began this psalm in the cave, but he came out at the end and sang in the sweet fresh air with joy. Those who know the Lord know that joyful sound.
