(1 Corinthians 1:30, 31) We have been looking at some of the psalms, and we will return to that topic. Yet that has actually been a break from our main topic, the names and titles of the Lord Jesus. Today we will consider Jesus, our sanctification. Sanctification means to be 'set apart' and is akin to 'holi- ness'. It is one of the most important aspects of the Christian life. Sanctification for the believer has two aspects: we are to be set apart from sin; we are to be set apart to God. The Savior did not need to be set apart from sin, yet He set Himself apart unreservedly and fully to the Father. Sanctification occurs in three stages in the life of the bom- again believer. Positionally the believer is sanctified. And such were some of you; but ye are washed, but ye are sancti- fied, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (1 Cor. 6:11). Salvation brings with it immediate sanctification. We become children of God and are no longer under the dominion of sin. This is settled, final, and cannot be canceled. We need to live in the confidence of this present reality. Progressively, the believer is being sanctified. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray your whole spirit, and soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thess. 5:23). It is a daily work of the Holy Spirit; a life-long work. It is the reason you have bills to pay, a car/tractor/truck that needs repair, and a body that needs healing. God is in the process of making those who know Him into the image of His dear Son. When He has tried us, we shall come forth as gold. We need to press on with the promise of this reality. Then there is final or absolute sanctification. The believer will be sanctified. For by one offering He has perfected for- ever them that are sanctified (Heb. 10:14). Ah, that glorious day, when God's loved ones are fully set apart to Him. No more sin; no more temptation; no more suffering. The believ- er needs to live with joy in light of this glorious coming reality. Sanctification therefore is automatic, progressive, and final. Creation itself awaits the day when God's own are fully sancti- fied, and it can return to its Eden-like state. Because the cre- ation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corrup- tion into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together unto now (Romans 8:21, 22). God uses several means at His disposal to accomplish sanc- tification in the life of the believer. These we will consider next time. www.ibcwestbrook.org 50th Wedding Anniversary 4 kids - 11 Grandkids • ! 50 Years...Prlceless.
