Kathy Pederson MN State Patrol Trooper Kathy: Can I take my child's drivers license away while he still lives with us? Yes and no. You can if he is under 18 and you are his legal guardian. Call Driver and Vehicle Services and remove your consent for your juvenile child to drive. Keep in mind this means your child will not have a driver's license any longer, and you cannot change your mind in two hours and let him drive to the game. You will most likely have to go through the process again. If he is over 18, you can't. They no longer need your permission for a dri- ver's license. Another question you. may ask yourself is who is paying the insurance? Show your child exactly how much it costs to insure them. Also, talk to your insurance agent. Many of them will show you or your teen how much your insurance will raise if they have a ticket or a crash. Teens are 7% of the drivers and are involved in 14% of the crashes. Crashes are the thing most likely to kill or injure your son or daughter. If they are not responsible in general, they are not going to be when driving either. Take the decision of whether or not to let your teen drive very seri- ously. Apply restrictions, and consequences, and final- ly pay very close attention. Take it from me; you'd be surprised if you knew what was going on out there in the teen world. If you have any ques- tionng traffic safety a[ '" rafflc':Iaw please write Sgt. Kathy Pederson at MN State Patrol, PO Box 344B, Marshall, MN 56258. Sgt. Pederson will not offer advice on specific situations or real events, which involve law enforcement.
