) ; TEN YEARS AGO April 16, 1981 Seventeen teams participated in the Jaycee State BB Gun Tournament held in Tracy Saturday, April 11. Members of the Walnut Grove team were Leslie McLaughlin, Gwen Weber, Amy Hansen, Chad Dallenbach, Tom Mattis, Rob Peterson and Dan Pfarr. Blue Ribbon-Winners: Gloria Jacobs won a blue ribbon on her child's hooded jacket and Ida Dawson was awarded a blue ribbon on her appliqued quilt at the Federated Women's Club County Rally held at Lamberton recently. Walnut Grove firemen practiced battling flames and smoke in a house on Monday. The vacant house at the former William Reese farm now owned by Duane Knott, was set on fire for the practice. Firemen prepared to enter the building after donning oxygen masks and 'tanks. NO GAS WORRIES --Ken Nelson wasn't worried about the gas price when he toured town last week with his two-horse (or should we say pony) powered wagon. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO April 14, 1966 Bent Skovmand, an agricultural exchange student at the University and a native of Denmark, came Thursday evening and will make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Grant Lee for the next 8 to 9 months. Hans Anderson of Minneapolis brought him and was a weekend guest in the Lee home 4th Armored Div Germany-- Army Pvt. Conrad V. Mentjes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ulrich W. Mentjes of Revere was assigned to the 4th Armored Division in Germany, March 28. He entered the service in November 1965. About 30 neighbors gathered at the Kenneth Gullickson home Monday evening for a farewell party honoring Mr. and Mrs. Donald Phillips. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips left Tuesday for Walker to be employed at Big Leech Resort. Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Coulter and family were guests in the Lester Beranek home in St. Paul from Monday until Friday of last week. Mr. Coulter attended a bus maintenance school at the state capitol building. FORTY YEARS AGO April 19, 1951 Lt. Col. Ida W. Danielson of the Army Nurses Corps retired on March 31, 1951, after practically 33 years of service. Idh W. Danielson of Walnut Grove joined in June, 1918, while she was a nurse at Rochester, MN. Musicians in the Walnut Grove High School music department receiyed high ratings at the district dinner and afternoon guests at the Mr. and Mrs. Steve Stassen home at Kerkhoven to celebrate Stephanie s 2nd birthday. On their return trip Mr. and Mrs. Stassen visited Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Sommerfield at Clara City. Thursday and Friday Jared and Jonna Maas stayed with their grandparents, Art and Alice Maas. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Jacobs were guests in the Mr. and Mrs. Art Krause home Sunday evening. Bruce and Brenda Arndtson of Hastings spent the weekend with her parents, Ken and June Tietz. Added Sunday dinner guests were Randy and Kris Tietz and family. Rita VanDeWiele of Grove Apartments accompanied David and Doreen VanDeWiele of Tracy and were Saturday overnight guests at the Mr. and Mrs. Leon VanDeWiele home at Cannon Falls Added Sunday guests to celebrate Joe's confirmation and Ea ster family gathering were Bernard and Audrey Winrich and Alesia of St. James, John and Jane Hass and family of Jackson, Harold and Julia VanDeWiele, Lucas and Ryan of Albert Lea. Sunday supper guests at the Dean and Lois Warner home to celebrate Rita's 10th birthday were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Warner, the Mark, Leon, Greg Warner and families and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Grefe and family. In the evening they attended the Dr. James B. Sawyer is winding up his dental practice this week as he will leave the first of next week for Fort Sam Houston, TX for active duty with the Army. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Hansen and family, Mrs. Peter Maguire and family of Walnut Grove and Hope Anderson of Milroy were among relatives attending the confirmation of Nathan Brown at Lord of Life LutheraD Church at Bismarck, ND. All were guests at the Bruce Brown home following the confirmation. Mike and Judy Anderson, Forest Tuesday evening dinner guests in the Lawrence and Avenell Boelke home were Mr. and Mrs. George Freeman, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Duus, Mr. and Mrs. Art Bauman, Mr. and Mrs. Vince Mielke and Marie Wertish, all of Springfield and Martin Krentz. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Boelke were dinner guests in the Lyle Johnson home in New Ulm on Sunday in observance of Lawrence's birthday. Added guests were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jensen and family of New Ulm. Alice Wittenburg of Glencoe was an overnight guest of Wednesday and Dale and Jeanne Bartlett of Kaylor, SD, were guests from'Friday - Sunday in the George and Ruth Bartlett home. They came especially to help George celebrate his birthday. Bob and Joyce Alcorn and Ben attended the wedding of a nephew, Rick Schager and Heather Petersen, at Sioux City, IA, on Saturday afternoon. Clair and Betty Baker were dinner guests at the Curtis Reinert home at Tracy on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Stan Oestreich and Michael of Sioux City, IA, were weekend guests of Rachael Oestreich.
