Jesus had just performed one of his most notable mira- cles-the feeding of the five thousand. Bread was there- fore on the minds of his fol- lowers. The Jew was very familiar with bread. It played a major part in their history. When Jesus began talking about bread and referred to Himself as 'the Bread of Life,' it brought many things to the mind of the Jew. They would think of the manna in the wilderness, the show- bread in the Tabemacle, and perhaps the bread provided by Joseph for his brothers in Egypt in the time of famine. At least four applications can be made regarding this title of our Lord. First, He is the Bread of God. For the bread of God is he which comes down from heaven, and gives life unto the worm (John 6:33). This speaks of Jesus' deity. He is the Eternal Son of the Eternal Father and is therefore able to give eter- nal life to all who come to Him. Those who appropriate Him live forever! Be sure, however, to understand that the communion bread does not become God as some teach. The bread of the Lord's Table is merely a picture, a memorial of Jesus' body and what He did at Calvary. Second, He is the Bread from Heaven. For the bread of God is He which comes down from heaven... Where did the manna given to Israel in the wilderness actually come from? Only God knows, but Jesus, seven times in this chapter alone, tells us that He came from heaven. He lived before He was born on earth. He is the pre-exis- tent One. If you become a child of God by faith, you will live forever in heaven with Him! Third, He is the Bread of Sacrifice. I am the living bread...and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the worm (John 6:51). This is a mystical section in which Jesus is clearly speaking of the cross. He gave His life, His flesh, as bread for us to have life. The commands to come, to eat, and to drink are all pictures of faith. The sin- ner must come to God in faith, based upon what Jesus did for us at the Cross and when He rose again. Jesus died once for all. He is no longer on the cross! He does not need to be crucified afresh. When we have Christ, the Bread, we will one day rise again! Finally, He is the Bread of Life. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life... This speaks of Salvation. While surely we need physi- cal bread (food) to live, we also need spiritual bread to live spiritually. Most of us have eaten something today. So each day the believer needs Jesus the living Word, through the written Word, in order to become mature in Christ. He is alive! He pos- sesses life, and He life. He is the Bread of Life! Only through Him does one have abundant life now and eternal life in heaven. www.ibcwestbrook.org SOCIAL /SEC URITY RETIREMENT Question: What can Social Security do to help me plan for my retirement? Answer: Everyone born in 1929 or later needs 40 Social Security "credits" to be eligible. You can earn up to four credits a year. So, you will need at least 10 years of covered employment or self-employ- ment to become eligible for retirement benefits. During your working years, we post earnings covered by Social Security to your record. You earn credits based on those earnings. The amount of earnings needed for a credit rises as average earnings lev- els rise. In 2010, and 2011, you receive one credit for each $1,120 of earnings, up to the maximum of four cred- its a year.
