A tribute to all mothers By Carolyn Van Loh Sentinel Tribune There are advantages to keeping files of articles, poems, and other items gleaned from magazines. . church bulletins, and other sources. I found the following Parable for Mothers in one of those files. It dates back to my days as a college student, but the thought expressed is timeless. Not everyone can be privileged to be a mother, but everyone of us has. or had, a mother. As you read. recall the special times you shared with your mother. The young mother set her foot on the path of life. Is the way long? she asked. Her guide said, Yes, and the way is hard. You will be old before you reach the end of it, but the end is better than the beginning. The young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. She played with her chil- dren, gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the cool streams. The sun shone on them, and life wasgood. The young mother replied, Nothing will ever be lovelier than this. The night came and the storm. The path was dark. The children shook with fear and cold. The mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle. The chil- dren said. Oh, Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near. No harm can come now, The mother answered, This is better than the brightness of day, for I have taught my children courage. The morning came, and there was a hill ahead. The children climbed and-grew weary. Their mother was weary, but at all times she said to her children, A little patience and we are there. So the children climbed, and when they reached the top. they said, We could not have done it without you, Mother. That night when she lay down. she looked up at the stars and said, This is a bet- ter day than the last, for my children have learned forti- tude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today I have given them strength. The next day came with its strange clouds that-dark- ened the earth. They were clouds of war, hate. and evil, and the children groped and stumbled. The mother said, Look up and lift your yes to the light. At the end of the da: she said. This is indeed the best day of all, for I have shown my children God. The days went on and the weeks and the months and the years. The mother grew old and was a little bent. But her children were Q tall and strong and walked with courage. en was hard, they mother, and when was tough, she was as light as At last they came Beyond the hill see a shining road golden gates flung The mother reached the end of t ne, and now I know end is better than ning. On my birthday, she will buy an ice cream cake and then she will rent four movies for us to watch. We open presents then watch my favorite movie. Then we'll go to our cozy bed. She is the best room I ever had in my whole life. I would never want her to be left out of anything and I love my mom very much. That's why my morn is the best!
