Today we will consider Psalm 24. It was likely composed because of the ark's ascension from the house of Obed-edom to finally rest in Mt. Zion (2 Samuel 6). David's thoughts went beyond this occasion to the day when Messiah would ascend to the throne of Zion. The Psalm forms a trio with Ps 22, 23. In Psalm 22 Jesus is presented as the Savior. In Psalm 23 He is the Shepherd. Now in Psalm 24 the Lord Jesus is the Sovereign. This beautiful psalm gives praise to Jehovah in His role as Creator (1, 2), Redeemer (3-6), and King (7-10). I think we can agree with one commentator that our response to these roles should be as a steward, a worshipper, and a victor. We are His stewards who enjoy His goodness in Creation (1, 2). The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Out of the entire uni- verse, the LORD chose the earth as His special place: to popu- late, send His Son, bring salvation, and one day set up a king- dom. From the very beginning, God made it clear that the whole earth and all the peoples, not just Israel and the Jews, belong to Him. The fullness of the earth speaks of its harvests, wealth, minerals, animals, vegetation, peoples, everything. The world belongs to Him because He created it. We are to replenish and utilize the earth for His purpose and glory. We are worshipers who experience His grace in redemption (3-6). Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD, or who shall stand in His holy place? He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully, He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the gen- eration of them that seek Him; that seek Thy face, 0 Jacob. Selah. The hill of the LORD is Mt Zion, a part of Jerusalem, where God dwelt via the ark. God's people must be clean if they are going to worship and serve Him. Only Jesus can come into God's presence in His own righteousness. We come by faith in the righteousness of Christ. Once saved, we receive many blessings from the LORD. How do we remain righ- teous? By daily confessing and forsaking sin (1 Jn 1:9). We are victors who celebrate His glory in conquest (7-10). Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, 0 ye gates, even lift them up ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory; Selah. Five times in these verses God is called the King of Glory! Jesus has been strong in battle, already winning vic- tory over sin, death, the grave, and hell. One day Jesus Christ will return in glory and enter the gates of Jerusalem. He will deliver the city from her enemies and establish His kingdom on earth! When this psalm was read on the day of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) the Jewish people were praising Him. Yet it didn't take long before they rejected Him and He was crucified. One day, at His Second Coming, it will be sung in truth and worship by all the redeemed! www.ibcwestbrook.org WESTBROOK LIBRARY By Karl Ourada Ourada), 12TH of Never by Monday 10:00-6:00 p.m. James Patterson, The Mystery Tuesday 10:00-6:00 p.m. Woman by Amanda Quick, Wednesday l:00-6:00p.m. The Lighthouse Road by Thursday 10:00-5:00 p.m. Peter Geye, The Hit by David Friday 10:00-5:00 p.m. Baldacci and Wedding Night New this week at the by Sophie Kinsella. library are youth books...
