The hands-on area includes a general store, post office, bank and telephone booth. The Museum received a $3000 matching grant through the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants pro- gram. Thirty-seven years ago after the NBC TV series, "Little House on the Prairie" premiered the small southwestern Minnesota town of Walnut Grove was finally recognized for its Laura Ingalls Wilder connection. When Wilder wrote her book, "On the Banks of Plum Creek" she neglected to include the name of the town near Plum Creek. Years following her publica- tion, Garth Williams, illustrator of the current Laura Ingalls Wilder books found on your library bookshelves, visited Walnut Grove showing the Gordon family where Laura's dug- I l F out was located. Located just 1 1/2 miles north of Walnut Grove, visitors can venture out to the Dugout Site near Plum Creek and see the sights described in her book. Growing from a one room museum to an eight building complex, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum has 18,000 visitors each year from all fifty states, over 30 countries and several Canadian provinces. The mission of the Museum is to provide information about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and other pioneer resi- dents of Walnut Grove; collect, catalog, pre- serve, display and interpret relevant historical artifacts; educate visitors about the contribu- tions of Laura Ingalls Wilder to literature and provide visitor information. It is also part of the Museum's mission to preserve the history of Walnut Grove from its founding until the pres- ent. This includes objects, photographs and archival items that document the social, eco- nomic, cultural, commercial, agricultural, reli- gious and educational life of the community.
