Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams Praying for God's Glory After this manner, there- fore pray: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come," Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9, 10) This is often called the Lord's Prayer, but maybe should be called the Disciple's Prayer, for Jesus gave it to His disciples. It is not meant to be memorized and repeat- ed, but was given as a model prayer to teach us how to pray. The phrase: After this manner therefore pray can be indicative (how to pray), or imperative (a command to pray). Here it is both indica- tive and imperative. This model prayer, given to us by the Lord Jesus, is so simple that a child can use it, so profound that an experi- enced saint cannot exhaust it, and it embraces all that I dare ask of my Father. We are at once confront- ed with a delicate balance of troth. On the one hand, Our Father indicates that this prayer is for saints only, for those trusting in the blood of the Lamb. It springs from a tender, loving father-son relationship. Only fourteen times in the Old Testament is God referred to as Father, and never by an individual person--it was too intimate to the Jewish mind. On the other hand, which art in heav- en reminds us that God is exalted above all, that there is a vast distance between the one praying and the Object of the prayer. These first two verses of the prayer concern the honor and glory of God. It begins with God's interests. The second part of the prayer (verses 11-13) is concemed with my own personal needs. Only after I have sought God's glory can I be con- cerned for my own needs. This prayer is far-reach- ing and soul-searching. It first concerns God's Name. Hallowed be thy name. We seek the honor and glory of the Father. God's name is holy, and we are praying that all that we do will uplift His holy name. In all the thoughts of our mind, the affections of our heart, the words of our lips, and the activities of our hands, we want God be hon- ored. Secondly, it concerns God's Kingdom: Thy kingdom come. We seek the honor and glory of the Son, the King. We want Him to rule in our lives now. We want Him to come soon and establish His Kingdom on earth. We desire that our present life, our hab- its, home, business, and social life all be under the rule of the authority of King Jesus. Thirdly, it concerns God's will: Thy will be done. We must seek the will of God in our lives guided by the Holy Spirit. Let us joyfully obey His commandments. Let us gladly acquiesce to His will. May all of our ambitions be sanctified by and submis- sive to His holy Will. If we know the Lord as our Savior, it is important how we pray. Using this prayer as our guidepost will set us on a course of doing the will of God in every area of our lives. ibcwbmn@centurytel.net HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN?
