Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams Fearing our Circumstances The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1a) This is a most blessed psalm, especially in times of trouble. It was a special favorite of my maternal grandmother. She encouraged me to hide it in my heart during my teenage years. It can become for us one of those 'songs in the night.' It is possible that David wrote this Psalm before he was anointed and while Saul was hunting for him. In any case, it is appli- cable to any believer who faces fear. When we know the LORD and trust in Him, He is able to give us deliverance from the various fears that can paralyze our lives. David speaks in this psalm of three of these fears. There is the fear of circumstances (1-6). The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life," of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this I will be confident. One thing I have desired of the LORD, that I will seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in HIS temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in HIS pavilion; in the secret of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall my head be lifted up above my enemies round about me; therefore I will offer in HIS tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises unto the LORD. This is the first time in Scripture where light is used as a metaphor for God. Yet that metaphor is used throughout God's Word. David looked at his circumstances from God's point of view. God is everything we need. He is light, so we need not fear the darkness. He is strength, so we need not fear our weakness. He is salvation, so we need not fear the battle. Note that He does not just give us light, strength, salvatiow--He is these things. Because the LORD had delivered David in the past, he knew that God would yet deliver him. The secret to David's public confidence was his private obedience. He wanted God's bless- ing (I have desired) and he took time to walk with God (1 will seek after). Out in the wilderness, he was far from the taber- nacle of God's presence. This did not stop him from meditating on the LORD and His goodness. 'Pavilion' comes from the Latin for butterfly--a tent-like structure like a butterfly's wings. In the time of trouble, He (God)... this is all we need. The beag.q of the LORD--what a word this is! Literally, it is pleas- antness. This speaks of His inner character, the variable splen- dor of His being. At the end of this section David promised that when he got back to the palace, he would give thank offerings to the LORD. How important it is to give thanks and praise for what He has done. This is only the fn'st of three fears from which the LORD can deliver those who trust in Him, those who know Him as personal Lord and Savior. Lowilling, we will omider:lb., other two next time. www.ibcwestbrook.org <http ://www.ibcwestbrook.org/> COLLEGE Knudson Admitted To SW MN State U Thomas Knudson, son of Mark Knudson of Walnut Grove. and Carmelita Pfarr from Tracy, has been accept- ed for the 2013 Fall semes- ter at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN.
