Having God's call to preach, I felt it important to attend a Bible college rather than a state college. The counselor was able to give me good, godly guidance. Fortunately, when we know the Lord, we have a constant Wonderful Counselor, the Lord Jesus. Counselor is one of a cluster of names given to the Lord Jesus in this verse: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. A counselor is one who has wisdom and under- standing, and to whom we go for guidance and advice. A pastor should serve this role. The Lord Jesus Christ is a wonderful counselor. He stands out as the counselor most excellent and exception- al. The Psalmist praised the Lord for the counsel he received. I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel (Psalm 16:7). His counsels of oM are faithful- ness and truth (Isaiah 25:1). He ever works all things after the counsel of his own will (Ephesians 1:11). His coun- sel is immutable--unchange- able (Hebrews 6:17). In par- ticular, we will see the mag- nificence of His counsel dur- ing His Kingdom rule (Isaiahl 1:1-5). In our society there are generally two kinds of coun- selors and Jesus fulfills both of these roles. There is a Counselor of State, or Secretary of State. Jesus ful- fills this role as a member of the Triune God. And God said, let u_.s make man in our image... (Genesis 1:26). Then there is a Counselor at Law--a lawyer. Jesus fulfills this by counseling His people concerning God's mind and will. I counsel thee... (Revelation 3:18). He is referred to as an advocate with the Father (1 John 2:2). There are at least three ways by which His counsel is imparted. First, it is imparted bye. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). Order my steps in Thy Word (Psalm 119: 133). It is also imparted by Providence. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go; I will guide thee with my eye (Psalm 32:8). Here we must be most careful to interpret life's circum- stances in the light of the Word. Finally, it is imparted by the Holy Spirit. When he, the Spirit of Truth is come, he will guide you into all truth (John 16:13). Fords many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God (Romans 8:14). It is by the Word of God that the Spirit is able to guide us. As someone said: "What a relief to know that there is a Counselor able to answer our questions, solve our riddles, and relieve us of our perplex- ity! Such a Counselor is Christ, who has a guiding mind to think for all, a guid- ing heart to feel for all, and a guiding hand to act for all." The believer will spend all of Eternity learning about and marveling at the wonder of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Trust Him, praise Him, and seek His counsel daily, for He is a Wonderful Counselor! www. ibewestbrook.org ....... , = A New Day for..
