I I II Volume No. 28 NUMBER 45 12 PAGES Plus supplements in local edition Fun Days -- another super fun weekend , Shiney Her named Miss Westbrook for 2013 -- weather near perfect with only a 20 minute down pour Saturday morning By Tom Merchant Sentinel Tribune WESTBROOK- Fun Days organizers did them- selves proud planning the annual event. Almost every- thing went on as planned. Other than an early morning shower on Saturday, the weather was about as good as you could get for the end of June. Thursday evening the Sanford Westbrook Medical Center hosted their communi- ty Bar-B-Que serving ham- burgers and trimmings on the street on the east side of the facility. The center also hon- ored Dean and Judy Lichty for their service. Following that the Westbrook Kiwanis presented an Evening of Praise featuring the Pageant Singers at the community cen- ter. At 10:30 a.m. Friday the Heritage Health Care Foundation held a 3 person golf scramble at Rolling Hills Golf Club. Friday evening three candi- dates, vied for the Miss Westbrook title. The Miss Westbrook directors put together another very enter- taining program. The theme for the Scholarship Program was "Life's a Ball!" The candidates were Steffanie Ankrum, Shiney Her, and Zua Her. Also participating were the candidates for the Little Miss Westbrook title: GaG Zong Yang, Kalen Brown, Kayla Freeburg, Shelby Foster, Jessica Harder, Caitlin Mershon, Nora Hemmingsen, Morgen Wersal, Aili Koenig, Mia Koenig, Olivia Anderson. Mistress of Ceremonies -- From left: Miss Westbrook 2013 Shiney Her, Little Miss Westbrook Mia Koenig, 1st princess Zua Her, and 2nd princess Steffanie Ankrum. Carolyn Enstad, introduced the judg- es -- Lisa Duroe, Marcia Smith, and Rhonda Maker. The candidaces opened the rogram with a "r'a routine includJ'' the little misses. :: Then' the. Miss Westbrook candi- dates performed cre- ative arts: Shiney Her performed a tra- ditional Hmong dance in traditional Hmong attire; Steffanie Ankrum performed her own choreographed cheering routine; Zua Her performed a vocal titled Beautiful. Next the Little Misses were pre- sented and they performed a dance routine. The candi- dates then per- formed a physical fitness routine to the tune of "I Don't Like to Dance." Following that, roy- alty from last year performed a come- dic sketch "50 Year Reunion of 2012 Miss Westbrook Royalty." Performing were last year's Miss Westbrook - Hunter Priegnitz; Princess Kelsi Wahl; and Princess Stephanie Gundermann. Kids enjoyed seeing and touching the animals from the Sanford sponsored Sioux Falls Zoo Mobile. After the Presence and Composure portion of the can- didates, the Little Miss candi- dates performed their dance routine followed by the crown- ing of Mia Koenig as the Little Miss Westbrook. Next was the scholarship awards and crowning of the new Miss Westbrook. Shiney Her was named Miss Photogenic by popular vote. Each candidate received a participation award of $175, ($100 from the VFW Post 5098, and $75 from the Miss Westbrook directors.) Shiney Her received the interview award of $200 from the Westbrook Lions Club. Shiney also won the Physical Fitness award of $200 from the Sanford Westbrook Medical Center, and the Creative Arts Presentation award of $200 from Micawber Club, and Muske, Muske, Suhrhoff law firm. Zua Her was winner of the Scholastic Achievement award of $100 Westbrook Kiwanis Club. Steffanie Ankrum, Miss Congeniality was award- ed $200 from the Walnut Grove -. Loggers. :: Then the moment everyone was waiting for -- Shiney Her was named Miss Westbrook for 2013, she received $350 ($250 from the Westbrook Area Volunteers, and $100 from Sanford Medical.) St. Olaf Lutheran Church celebrated 125 years A good time was had by all! WALNUT GROVE -- Last Sunday morn- ing members of rural St. Olaf Lutheran Church cel- ebrated their 125th anniver- sary. Members and friends gathered to celebrate by singing their praises and heating letters from former pastors. After the ceremony, members gathered in front of the church for a congre- gational picture. Members also admired an antique John Deere trac- tor, owned by John Bakken. The tractor was used to dig the basement of the present church building. After the picture was taken, the ladies of the church served a picnic pot- luck dinner on the south side of the church. Above: Members visited after having their picture taken.
