By Pastor Rob Adams The Lord's Servant Behold, my servant shall deal prudently," He shah be exalted, and be very high. As many were astonished at Thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men. So shall He startle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at Him; for that which had not been told them they shall see; and that which they had not heard, they shall consider (Isaiah 52:13-15)• The story is told how Napoleon, unable to sleep and walk- ing about, found a young sentry asleep during the night• The great general picked up the boy's gun and stood watch until the dawn. The boy upon awakening was quite frightened. He was told only to be more careful in future. Jesus is the Co-Creator, yet He became the Father's Servant here on earth. Sometime in eternity past, the Triune God-head determined that the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, would come to earth as a lowly servant. Jesus was willing to do this. He made this clear on several occasions: I come to do thy will, 0 God (Heb 10:9); I delight to do Thy will, 0 my God (Ps 40:8); My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work (John 4:34). The Jews were expecting a king. They wanted him to ride in and deliver them from their enemy, the Romans• Instead, God sent a servant, who showed them how to live in victory over much greater enemies--sin, death, and hell. In the Lord Jesus, we see the idea of a servant displayed in at least three ways. We see His servant's heart in His voluntary submission (Phil 2:5-11). Paul tells us that He willingly took upon Him the form of a servant (7). To do so, while being in the form of God, He had to surrender the glory of His deity. On the eve of His passion, when He was fully conscious of His deity, He girded Himself with a towel, like a common slave, and washed the feet of His disciples (John 13:3-5)• His service was voluntary, willing, and sacrificial, We also see His servant's heart in His total dependence• Though Jesus willingly became a servant, He never acted independently of the Father. He confessed: I can of my own self do nothing (John 5:30). His life was infused with prayer• He lived in such close fellowship with the Father, that He only did His will. We finally see His servant's heart in His steadfast devotion• Even when he was a lad of twelve, we hear His declaration to give first priority to His Father's service: Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business? (Luke 2:49). From that day to the last, He focused on what the Father asked of Him. Later He said: I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him that sent me (John 6:38)• As noted before, He wrestled with His emotions in the garden, and finally said, Not my will, but Thine be done. He was able to say at the end of His life here on earth: I have finished the work You gave me to do (John 17:4). It is the finished work at Calvary that enables us to come to the Father in faith and repentance• What an example He set for us. He submitted voluntarily, He was totally dependent upon the Father, and He gave His entire devotion• Are we actively doing the will of the Father? Is the love of Christ that which constrains us daily? If we know the Lord, may we be enabled by Him to live faithfully for Him, so that one day we can hear Him say: Well done, good and faithful servant. • Sentinel Tribune Tip Line • • If you see news happening or have • • a story idea call our News Tip • Line. 274-6136 or • Due to staff limitations we may not always • be able to respond to your tips or ideas. • However we will do our best to give every • • call full regard. • • Thank you for your help and • consideration. °
