There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer. and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob (Romans l 1:26). The Psalmist relayed the longing cry of ancient Israel: Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion/ When the LORD brings back the captivity of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad (Psalm 14:7). Paul further instructs us as to the three-fold deliver- ance secured for us in Christ: Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliv- er: in whom we trust that He will yet deliver us (2 Co 1:9- 11). Deliverance is usually the result of war. Our nation was delivered from the power of Britain by the War of Independence which we recently celebrated. The Lord Jesus is able to deliver us from three things: sin, death, and hell. And His deliverance is accomplished in three stages. It is these stages upon which we wish to focus our attention today. He is able to deliver from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and the presence of sin. Jesus is able to deliver from the penalty of sin. This occurs the moment that we repent and place our faith in Christ. It has nothing to do with baptism or church mem- bership-these both follow faith (Acts 2:41). Our sins separate us from a holy God. But your iniquities have sepa- rated between you and your God... (Is 59:2). Yet there is deliverance in Christ. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). If you ha-d been born again by faith, then this deliverance s past and settled. Jesus also delivers from the power of sin. For the believer, this is present and ongoing. We do not have to sin, yet living in victory over sin is a constant struggle. Paul voiced this for all believ- ers when he wrote, O wretch- ed man that I am t. Who shall deliver me from this body of death? (Romans 7:24). It is a daily battle, demanding that we put on the whole armor of God... (Ephesians 6:11-13). Yet victories are possible through the help of our blessed Lord. But thanks to God which gives us the vic- tory through our Lord. Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:55- 58). Finally, the Lord Jesus will deliver the believer from the presence of sin. This of course will be in the future. What delight there will be to not have to struggle with this old nature: ...that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is. the devi# and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage (Hebrews 2:14, 15). What a relief to be free of the curse that sin has brought to this world. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him (Revelation 22:3). When our Lord Jesus is referred to as the Deliverer, this is not an understatement. He delivers from sin, death, and hell. This deliverance is past, present, and future. If you do not know the joy that the Deliverer can bring, repent and trust Him today. www.ibcwestbrook.org ruing your local tems ] l l l Advertise your i paper,: 20 words For even more oaverqe advert/se in.the Northwest Iowa Peach Southwest MinneSota peal', South Dakota Pel l: Or for your best coverage reach 79,000 households for onb t $'t5.95 5elt those small items that are duttenng the garoge.
