GLANCES IN THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS AGO July 15, 1998 After more than 20 years as Cottonwood County Sheriff, Glen Ward has decid- ed to turn in his badge and retire when his term ends in January. Ward has the notori- ety of being one of the few, if not only, sheriff in southwest Minnesota to run unopposed in 20 years of service. Early on Friday morning, June 26, a burglary at the M & M store in Slayton was reported to the Slayton Police Department. The only thing missing was the safe, which was later located north of the first dike at Lake Shetek. Murray County Boat and Water recovered the safe, which had been pried open and was empty. THIRTY YEARS AGO July 14, 1983 Rick Ewy started his chain of drive-ins in Westbrook, and at the ripe old age of 21, is the proud owner of no less than three drive-inns. He calls them all "Shady Drive Inn". His Westbrook and Storden businesses are open only in the summer, but his place in Slayton is open year- round. Larry Larson of Hendricks, and his partner, Maynard Kramer of Elkton, SD, have purchased Harold's Foodland in Westbrook from Harold Schmidt. Larson owns a gro- cery store in Hendricks, MN and Arlington, SD. Kramer has stores in Elkton, Aurora, and White, SD. They own a store together in Clear Lake, SD. FORTY FIVE YEARS AGO July 18, 1968 House numbers will soon be seen on all Westbrook buildings. Members of the local Kiwanis Club will be selling the numbers and will install them free of charge. The Board of Directors of Independent School dis- trict 175, voiced approval of proposed merger plans involving the Westbrook and Storden school districts. The Storden Board has already made a similar decision. Both Westbrook and Storden have requested the County Supt. of Schools prepare a plat of the 2 districts and then be submitted to the State Commission of Education for approval. The Dovray School District will consoli- date with Westbrook district, effective September 1, 1968. Fifty-nine members of the Westbrook High School band, under the direc- tion of Eldred Quamstrom and assisted by Russell Kopperud, left Saturday for Detroit Lakes to participate in the Jaycees Waterama Parade Sunday afternoon. The band has also marched in the July 4 parade in Worthington, and the Dutch Festival parade in Edgerton.
