Woelber; Principal Bill Richards; AD Theisen; also present were Josh Barron and Tom Merchant. Helmer called the meeting to order at 7:00; Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Motion by Maas seconded by Knakmuhs to approve the previous minutes from May 16, 2016 Board Meeting. Motion carded. Motion by Madson sec- onded by Jorgenson to approve the agenda. Motion carded. Motion by Maas seconded by Jorgenson to approve the claims, account balances, treasurer reports and vendor payments. Motion carded. Visitor Reports: Josh Barton reported that 86 students in grades 9-12 participated in the WWG FFA program this past year keeping the grand tradition strong. There were 15 teams, and 11 of the teams (fifty- two students) competed at the state level. Jim Menton served as FFA Trap Shoot advisor. Luke Nelson was the FFA Choir advisor. AD Theisen gave his par- ticipation report for years 2009 - the present. Obviously, numbers are declining due to enrollment. In football news, 26 teams are in our district on a 2-year rotation. The gym has been used for the usual summer camps. Motion by Jorgenson sec- onded by Madson to approve the Read Well by Third Grade plan as proposed by Principal Olson. Principal Richards pre- sented a handout with pho- tos from the June Arts work- shops. This was the final set of workshops for the Perpich Center for Art Education partnership. He mentioned that he was still tweaking the academic schedule for the 2016-2017 school year. Summer school was held for 8 days with 18 students participating. Only 25% of the student body orders a yearbook these days. He reminded the board of the continued need for goal setting for the future of the district. The board applauded Mr. Richards for his many years of excep- tional service. Superintendent Woelber remarked that the stove proj- ect in Walnut Grove will soon be complete. Medal of Honor Society Character Development Curriculum training will be a Life 101 class for 8th and 9th graders this fall. This fall, WWG will be one of eight Minnesota schools that will receive a site visit from a Medal of Honor recipient: Leo Thorsness is a Medal of Honor recipient who grew up in Walnut Grove. He will visit our school if his health allows. Woelber also gave kudos to the community of Westbrook for its Fun Days weekend and to the commu- nity of Walnut Grove for the Pageant. Motion by Knakmuhs sec- onded by Jorgenson to assign $20,000 from FY 2017 to a designated reserve roofing fund. Motion car- fled. Motion by Jorgenson sec- onded by Barron to approve the preliminary 2016-2017 budget with estimated reve- nues of $5,761,645 and esti- mated expenditures of $6,096,489 for a deficit of $334,844. Motion carded. Reductions that remain under consideration: Food Service staff in Westbrook, Music by .2, cutting a van route. Administration has been cut by $65-$70,000. Motion by Maas seconded by Kleven to approve the renewal of MREA member- ship for the 2016-2017 school year. Motion carded. Motion by Barron second- ed by Knakmuhs to approve $12,000 expenditure for the theater project with total cost reimbursed by the Education Foundation. Motion carded. Motion by Maas seconded by Madson to approve Amy (Nelson) Herder as Title Instructor and Elementary Para. Motion carded. Motion by Knakmuhs sec- onded by Kleven to approve support staff employment letters and $.50/hour increas- es (3.3%) for the 2016-2017 school year. Motion earfled. Motion by Maas seconded by Kleven to approve the retirement of Tom Vondracek effective September 7, 2016. Motion carded. Motion by Maas seconded by Knakmuhs to call for a resolution (as follows) estab- lishing dates for filing affi- davits of candidacy for the WWG ISD #2898 School Board from August 2, 2016 - August 16, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the district office in Westbrook. Vote: Maas, yes; Madson, yes; Kleven, yes; Knakmuhs, yes; Helmer, yes; Jorgenson, yes; Barron, yes. Said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted. RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING DATES FOR FILING AFFIDAVITS OF CANDIDACY BE IT RESOLVED by the School Board of the Independent School District No. 2898, State of Minnesota, as follows: 1. The period for filing affidavits of candidacy for the office of school board member of Independent School District No. 2898 shall begin on August 2, 2016 and shall close on August 16, 2016. An affida- vit of candidacy must be filed in the office of the school district clerk and the $2.00 filing fee paid prior to 5:00 o'clock p.m. on August 16, 2016. 2. The clerk is hereby authorized and directed to cause notice of said filing dates to be published in the Westbrook Sentinel, the offi- cial newspaper of the dis- trict, at least two (2) weeks prior to the first day to fi I e affidavits of candidacy. 3. The clerk is hereby authorized and directed to cause notice of said filing dates to be posted at the administrative offices ofthe school district at least ten (10) days prior to the first day to file affidavits of can- didacy. 4.
