Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams Alcohol reduces inhibitions and opens the door for suc- cumbing to seduction, lust, and perversity. It is not for kings, 0 Lemuel, it is not .for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink; lest t'hey drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of the afflicted. (Prov 31:4,5) Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, men of strength to mingle strong drink: which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteous- ness of the righteous from him. (Isaiah 5:22, 23) But they also have erred throu-gti ..... :~ wine, and through strong l drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, and they are swallowed up of wine, and they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stum- ble in judgment. (Isaiah 28:7) Alcoholic beverages reduce one's ability to think and act rationally, consistently. Is it any wonder that even the pro- ducers of alcoholic beverages encourage us to "Think before we drink?" Third, it ends in perdition. Do ye not know that the unrighteous shah not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither fornica- tors, nor idolaters, nor adul- 1 terers, nor effeminate, nor i homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Co 6:9, 10; Gal 5:21) Drunkenness is one of the many sins that can grip a per- son's life and keep them from repentance and faith in Christ alone. If you are in the grasp of this sin, the Lord can help you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) Next week we will ~ogr sider the question of ~ drinking. www.ibcwesthrook.org The Way of the Drunkard And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18). The consumption of alco- hol as a beverage is part of life for most people. It is available in restaurants, gro- cery stores, homes, at ball games, parties and just about everywhere that people gath- er. Last week we considered the characteristics of alcohol, which are that it deceives, distorts, and ultimately destroys. Today we will look at the consequences of drunk- enness. Our source of infor- mation will continue to be the blessed Word of God, our infallible guide for faith and practice. True, an occasional drink may not make one a drunk- ard, just as playing the lottery now and then may not make one an addicted gambler. Yet, after considering the charac- teristics of alcohol, one must admit that an occasional drink places one in the peril of becoming a drunkard. Alcohol can bring devastat- ing results. First, it can end in poverty. He that loves plea- sure shall be a poor man," he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich. (Prov 21:17) The drunkard and glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. (Prov 23:21) The drunkard wastes his money on alcohol and he wastes his life in drunkenness. Second, it ends in perver- sion for it corrupts one's mor- als. Notice these words of old: Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. At the last it bites like a ser- pent, and stings like an adder. Your eyes shall': : behold strange things, and your heart shah utter perverse things.
