SENTINEL TRIBUNE FALL SPORTS RouNDuP Wednesday, August 31, 2011 Page 9 Chargers looking to contend in conf,erence Chargers counting on good team height in the front row to help make up for loss of some key seniors By Tom Merchant Sentinel Tribune WWG -- After coaching for 13 seasons head coach, Natalie Ross, has stepped down making way for new Head Coach Cathy Baumann. Assisting Coach Baumann is Sue Herding. There is 25 players, 9-12, out for volley- ball. Last year's record was 21-9, with a con- ference and post season record of 8-3, and losing in the third round of the sections to sec- tion champions Windom. Baumann will be looking for leadership from her four retuming letter winners: Maddie Frank, Anne Woelber, Karley Deprez, and Dayna Comnick. Baumann is looking for under classmates to step up to help the team progress. Baumann sites having a lot of team height which she hopes to utilize in the front row. "We have strong blockers and hitters," she said. "We hope to improve on our passing, dig- ging, and serving this year as the season pro- gresses," said Baumann. She expects her squad to work toward becoming a strong, unified team on and off the court, which she believes will lead them to a successful season. Baumann feels that MCC will be the con- ference favorite, because they were strong in the conference last year. The Chargers dropped their opener last Friday at Tracy 3-0. Charger football returning 11 lettermen Chargers looking to improve on last years season with a good group of returning letter winners By Tom Merchant Sentinel Tribune WWG-- Coaching duo, Carter Ross and Leo Theisen, in their 14th year of coaching together, are optimistic about the 2011 squad get- ting back in the hunt for a conference championship. With 11 returning let- ter winners, they feel there is a good core of experienced players returning to help them contend in the Southern Confederacy Conference. Assisting them are, Eric Larson, Rick Mischke, Steve Elzenga. The team has 35 boys out for the sport. Last year the team ended up in the conference with an 4-5 record, and were 0-1 in the playoffs suffering a loss to 11 man team Fulda Raiders : 35-14. Coaches, loss and Theisen, are happy to be back in the nine man playoffs. Returning letter winners this year are: Jake Comnick, Nick Lehnhoff, Dylan Jenniges, Shawn Hanson, Derrick Ourada, David McClellan, Andy Merrick, Dana Madson, Matt Otto, and Reed Bakken. The coaches are looking at the fol- lowing players to step up to help fill spots vacated by graduating seniors: Aaron Hass, Jarett Herder, Levi Bunting, John Elzenga, Tyler Schoborg, Dusty Taylor, and Simon Egaas. Both coaches said they are happy with the size of the lines, but they will have to continue to improve on both sides of the ball. The team is expected to benefit with the return of 1000 yard rusher Jake Comnick in the back field, run- ning behind a stronger line. On defense coach Theisen said "we will have to work on our defen- sive secondary play and conditioning, and not give up as many big plays as last year." They hope to surprise a lot of teams and contend for a conference title. Their goal is to win their first game and keep on improving through the season. The coaching staff puts Edgerton, Hills Beaver Creek and Nicollet as teams to beat with the Chargers some- where in the mix.
