Evangelist Chovan was converted on the Island of Okinawa, Japan while serv- ing in the US Air Force in 1976. God called him into the Gospel ministry the same By Pastor Rob Adams Shiloh The scepter shall not depart from Judah, or a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and unto Him shall the gathering of the people be (Gen 49:10). The Bible camp that we support is named Camp Shiloh. What does Shiloh mean? It is a reference to Jesus Christ and is one of the earliest Messianic promises. When Jacob was dying, he gathered his twelve sons and gave them each a blessing (Gen 49). For example, Reuben was praised for being the firstborn, but chided for his weak character. Issachar was called a strong donkey bearing burdens. It was prophesied that Dan would judge his people. Benjamin would be like a ravening wolf. Zebulon would dwell by the sea and be a haven for ships. The tribes created banners that reflect these words of Jacob. These banners were carried by the tribes as they marched through the wildemess and fought their battles. In the order of the tribes' movement, Judah is first. Judah means 'praise the Lord.' Surely this is a good way to begin anything that we do. Jacob paid special attention in his dying prophecies to Joseph and Judah. We can understand his attention to Joseph, for he was his favorite. It is difficult though to understand the prominence given to Judah, for he was not the firstborn or favorite, and his character was questionable at times. We can say only that he was chosen by God's undeserved grace. You will fred the full words of Jacob to Judah in Genesis 49:8-12. Shiloh was a village about twenty miles from Jerusalem. The Ark of the Covenant and the tabernacle were there from the time of Joshua through Samuel. A yearly feast was held there. So what does the word mean? It is difficult to defme, but it most likely means 'tranquility,' or 'peace.' Grouped with the other words in our text (scepter, lawgiver) it speaks of the character of Jesus' Millennial Kingdom--a reign of peace and rest. Some say that Shiloh means 'sent;' others, 'whose it is;' we cannot be sure. If we blend these possible meanings together, indeed, Jesus is the One sent by the Father, to whom belongs the Kingdom, bringing peace to the world. Although 'Shiloh' is a bit obscure, we will settle on 'peace' in its reference to the Messiah. Let us briefly look at Jesus' ministry of peace. He was sent by God to bring peace. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men (Luke 2:14). He will indeed make peace between men and God. And having made peace through the blood of His cross. by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself," by Him, I say, whether they be things on earth, or things in heaven (Col 1:20). He bestows peace on all who trust Him as Lord and Savior. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the worm gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). The promise to Judah is that his seed would retain authority until the advent of the righteous Ruler, the Messiah, to whom all people would gather. One glad day the entire world will gather to Him when He comes to earth to usher in His reign of peace and tranquility. Jesus is Shiloh, the One who brings peace and security. He is the Prince of Peace! How wonderful to possess both peace With God, and the peace of God. The one brings salvation, the other a sweet, contented life. www.ibcwestbrook.org year.
