Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood (Revelation 1:5). These things says the Amen, the faith- ful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God (Revelation 3:14). The word witness is the word from which we get our word martyr--one who gives testimony to the truth at the expense of his life. It is a favorite word of the Apostle John, being found over seventy times in his writings. In his salutation in the book of the Revelation (1:5), John has a triad of names covering the past, present and prospective ministries of our Lord: Faithful Witness--referring to His past, public ministry; First Begotten of the Dead--He is alive for evermore; Prince of the Kings of the Earth--referring to His future millennial reign. It is the first of these titles upon which we will pause and consider. It embraces the entirety of our Lord's life from the cradle to the grave. He alone is the faitlfful witness: "The path of human testimony is strewn with wreck and rain. He alone passed through earth in His solitary and rugged path of unswerving devotedness to God, without break or flaw in all His holy faithfulness to God." At His trial, when asked: Are you a king then? Jesus declared to Pilate, To this end I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth will hear my voice. (John 8:37) At least three things go into the making of a faithful witness. Each of these is evident in the life of our Lord Jesus. First is experience. A witness must know what he is talking about. There must be personal experience to back up the testimony. If you saw an accident occur, you can be a true witness to that event if called upon. Christ is the only one who has seen and known the Father, and therefore when He speaks about the Father, He deserves our attention. All things are delivered to me of my Father: no man knows who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal Him (Lk 10:22). No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. (John 1:18). Second is certainty. A doubtful witness is no good. No one pays much attention to one's testimony unless it rings true. A false witness does much more harm than good. Christ always declared the truth with authority and certainty because He is the Truth (Jn 14:6). Behind the witness of His lips was the faithfulness of His life. And because I tell you the truth, ye do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin? And if I say ...... the truth, why do ye not believe me? (John 8:45, 46) The third characteristic of a faithful witness is boldness. A testimony has greater effectiveness when it is proclaimed with courage. Jesus never shrank from speaking the truth boldly, even in the face of danger. For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes (Matt 7:29). Jesus said unto them: 'Truly, truly, I say unto you, before Abraham"wa~/t~. Then they took up stones to cast at Him. (John 8:58;'~9) ' If you are a true believer, with Jesus as your example, be a faithful witness for the Lord. Speak from experience, with certainty, and with boldness. Don't be afraid or ashamed to tell others what the Lord has done for your soul. www.ibcwest- Sentinel Tribune Tip Line .
