SENTINEL TRIBUNE SPORTS Wednesday, October 12, 2011 Page 9 Chargers out-gunned by Raiders .33-14 Mistakes in the first half put the Chargers behind the 8 ball against Nicollet By Tom Merchant Sentinel Tribune NICOLLET -- It was a dark and windy night at Nicollet as the Chargers took on the Nicollet Raiders. A very strong wind made conditions tough for passing, but despite that, quarterback, John Elzenga threw for 205 yards and a touchdown. In the first quarter the two teams battled for field position with neither gaining much advantage. Then the Raiders recovered a Charger fumble at their own 15 yard line. On fourth downthe Raiders connected with a 6 yard pass to the end zone. After kick- ing the extra point the Raiders took a 7-0 lead. Midway through the second quar- ter it looked like the Chargers had scored on a half back option with Jake Comnick completing a 27 yard pass to Andy Merrick. Unfortunately there was a motion penalty and it was called back. Again the two teams swapped possessions, but with about a minute to play in the half the Raiders scored again on a 26 yard pass, and added the extra point via a kick upping the Raiders lead to 14-0. On their second possession of the third quarter the Chargers had a good drive stopped when the Raiders picked off an Elzenga pass at the 12 yard line. The Chargers then forced a punt but ended up going three and out and had to punt back to the Raiders. The Raiders on the next play completed a 70 yard pass play for a touchdown, the extra point failed but Charger defense went after a Raider ball carrier in the first half of the game last Friday night at Nicollet. Charger Dylan Jenniges was challenged by a Nicollet defender as he hauled in this pass during the game last Friday night. the Raiders upped their lead to 20-0. On the next series the Chargers got on the board scoring on a 65 yard pass from Elzenga to Nick Lehnhoff. The two point conversion failed but the Chargers narrowed the gap to 20-6. In the fourth quarter the Chargers added a touchdown and 2 point con- version on a 12 yard run by Comnick and extra point run by Lehnhoff. Isaac Wahl was our winner for the past week. He was the only picker to have 17 right. He also moved into sole possession of the overall lead. Just a note to contestants, there were two pickers that left one or more games unselected. So, if you are going to think about a pick, be sure to go back and pick it. One picker only picked one of the college games. So be sure you look over your picks before sending them to us. Gee... nobody picked the Gophers to win last week, so everyone got that one right. Surprisingly there was more that picked the Vikings over Arizona rather than the other way around. The "law of averages" and "any given Sunday" finally kicked in I guess.
