Beckmann was combining corn when a bearing over- heated and began to smol- der. Marlys Youngck received an employee recognition jeweled pin for 20 years of service to Winona State University. She was also one of 12 who received a Faculty Merit Award of $1,000, First place winners in the fire poster contest were Tracy McConnell, Jonathan Steen, JaDee Goehring, Kari Enstad, and Christine Kirchner. Overall winner was Allison Cassel. turns bad. Aleida and Tregory Van Maasdam participated in the 6th Annual Conference for Young Artists held on October 12, at Southwest State University campus in Marshall. Over 425 con- ference participants, rep- resented private, public; and home schooled stu- dents in grades 3-8 attended the conference. THIRTY YEARS AGO October 18, 1979 Fire caused heavy dam- age at the Farmers Elevator Co. last Friday night before firemen from Westbrook, Storden, Dovray, Tracy, Marshall, and Worthington brought it under control. The fire, which was believed to TWENTY YEARS have started from an elec- trical short, quickly AGO October 18, 1989 Favorable area weather has helped move the har- vest along with nearly all of the beans taken out, and a big chunk of the corn crop has already been put in the bin. Many farmers have been able to put the corn directly into the bins as the moisture levels have been very low. Huset Construction was busy last week pouring one section of the floor in the new fire hall being built on the corner of Sixth and Adams. The job will take over 350 yards of cement to finish. The crew is still pouring this week, hoping to complete it before the weather spread in the 140,000 bushel storage facility, fanned by cold northwest winds. Damage was con- fined to the storage facili- ty at the elevator. Lieutenant Colonel Gary L. Nelsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie L. Nelsen, was recently named com- mander of the 703rd Tactical Air Support Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base. Nelsen is a 1955 graduate of Westbrook High School. The Westbrook Wildcat Volleyball team is tied for first place in the confer- ence. They are tied with Walnut Grove " and Morgan for first place after downing Morgan Tuesday night 2-0. Brianne Jean McCreary and Cody Carl White were married June 11, 2009 at Matamaroa Island, Fiji. Parents of thb couple are Dan and Wanda McCreary, Chippewa Falls, WI, and Tom and Patty White, Westbrook, MN. Grandparents are Vernon and Betty Cohrs, Westbrook. A garden reception for the family was held July 11, 2009 at Dan and Wanda McCreary home in Chippewa Falls. Brie graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 2001 and from the U of MN Twin Cities in 2008 with a BS in Elementary Educaiton. Cody graduated from WWG High School in 2001. He served in the U.S. Navy 2001-2005. He graduated from the U of MN Twin Cities in 2009 with a BA in History. They now reside in Los Angeles where Cody has started his graduate stud- ies 'at the University of California, Los Angeles. Look to the future at 4-H Federation meeting By Margie Anderson 4-1-1 Program Coordinator What do you want to be when you grow up? There will be a careers test at the Murray County 4-H Federation on October 26 that may help to answer that question. The busi- ness meeting will get underway at 7:30 p.m. at the Courts Building in Slayton. Agenda items include Federation offi- cers election, county fair review (including some proposals for the 2010 fair), Livestock Committee election, state fair delegates report, annual fundraiser, and the 2009-2010 budget. Everyone in attendance will receive 4-H Cash, redeemable at the 2010 county fair food stand. The Fenton Friends 4-H Club will serve pumpkin bars.
