But wisdom is justified of her chil- dren (Matt 11:19). Very few people in the Bible are referred to as being a friend of God. Notable are Moses (Ex 33:11) and Abraham (Isaiah 41:8), but also Judas of all people (Matthew 26:50)! This week we will consider one of the sweetest of Jesus' names--Friend. In our text He is called by His enemies a friend of_sinners. What are some of the characteristics of a good friendship? Though we may not give much thought to that question, we can each answer it intuitively: faithfulness, undeserving love, sac- rifice, etc. Perhaps a more important question would be how I can be a friend of God? What are the essentials of true friendship with God? Happily, they are the same requirements for earthly friendship. First, there must be confidence. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). This is the foundation--the more we know of our fiiends, the more we trust them. Faith is the beginning of friendship with God. We must trust the Lord Jesus and His Word. Second, there must be love. That is essential, and it leads to obedience. In the case of human friendship, we are willing to do the bidding of our friend. In our relationship to Jesus, we cannot say that we love Him if we do not obey Him. We prove our love by our obedience(John 15:10, 14). The third essential is honesty. Friends are not afraid to be honest with one another. Friends love one another in spite of shortcomings. Jesus knows all about you and yet loves you in spite of it all. Jesus tells us the truth in His Word, and we need to hear it. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so does the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend (Proverbs 27:6, 9, 17). Fourth is consideration. Friends delight to satisfy each other's wishes. They consider each other over their own feel- ings and wants. We must give God every consideration. A man that has friends must show himself.friendly (Prov 18:24a). The fifth essential is sacrifice. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (Jn 15:13). This is the ultimate gift we can give a loved one. Jesus gave Himself for us. He asks in return that we give ourselves fully to Him. Sixth is loyalty. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity (Prov 17:17). True friends stand up for each other, even when absent from one another. We must take our stand for the Son of God in this wicked age if we are His friends. Finally, we have the essential of perpetuity. There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Prov 18:24b). A true friendship stands the test of time. Jesus will never leave us or forsake us. He asks the same of us in return. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up (Ps 27:10). Even when we have no family or friends on this earth, the Lord Jesus can be our Friend ifwe, will submit to Him, mast Him, and allow Him to have first place in our life. www.ibcwestbrook.org WESTBROOK LIBRARY By Kari Ourada Hours: Monday 9:00-6:00 p.m. Tuesday 9:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday 1:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday 9:00-3:00 p.m. Friday 9:00-3:00 p.m. New fiction audio books are as follows: Wicked Prey, Rough Country and Bad Blood all by John Sandford, You've Been Warned by James Patterson, The Scarecrow and Chasing the Dime both by Michael Connelly, Lucid Intervals by Stuart Woods, No Place Like Home by Mary Higgins Clark, Karen Robards Compact Disc Collection; Bait, Superstition and Vanished, Hour Game and Absolute Power both by David Baldacci, Jayne Ann Krentz CD Collection; Light in Shadow, Truth or Dare and Awake (all given in memory of Frederica Wancenried Wegener by family and friends) Changing Habits by Debbie Macomber, Deadly Deals and Game Over both by Fern Michaels, The Christmas Hope Collection by Donna VanLiere, Shopaholic & Sister by Sophie Kinsella, Full Bloom and Full Scoop by Janet Evanovich and Married Lovers by Jackie Collins.
