Those two scores would have erased the 10 point deficit, but it was not to be and the Chargers can be proud of their 9 and 1 season. The Chargers kicked off to Luverne to start the game. Matt Birdsey took the ball on his 12 and returned it to the 32. On the first play Birdsey picked up a first down on his 43, and two more runs and he had another 1st on the Charger 47. That is when the Charger defense took over, holding the Cardinals to no gain on three plays. Luverne punted to Josh Meyer on the 10 and he returned it to the 27. A pass from Troy Steen to Nick Kuehl was good for a 1st on the 37. Meyer carried for 3, 3 and 6 for another 1st on the 48. Steen got a pass to Jason Bakke good for a 1st on the Cardinal 24. Chad Boeck picked up 7 and Meyer 7 and the Chargers were 1st on the 14. Boeck picked up 11 for a 1st on the 3 and two plays later Meyer went into the endzone. The extra point by Juhl Erickson was good and the Chargers led 7-0. On the next series, Birdsey took the kickoff on his 15 and returned it to the 32. Cory Nelson picked up 4 and then Birdsey got another 1st on the 48. Another run by Birdsey was good for a 1st on the Charger 38. Mark Lais picked up 4 and Birdsey 2 as the first quarter ended. On the first play of the second quarter Nelson hit Chad Overgaard for a 1st down on the 20. On the next play, Lais broke free and scored. The extra point was no good and the score was Chargers 7, Luverne 6. The Chargers started from their 20 yard line when the kickoff went into the endzone. Meyer carried for 9 and then 5 fOr a 1st on the 34. On the next play the Cardinals were called for a personal foul and the Chargers had a 1st on the 48. Meyer moved to the Cardinal 48 but a penahy moved them back to their own 38 and then Steen was sacked for a i5 yard loss to the 24. After an incomplete pass, the Chargers punted. Nelson took the ball on his 24 and then Lais made a 1st down on the 19. Birdsey carried for 5, 3 and 3 to give them a 1st on the Charger 7. Birdsey carried for 3, was stopped for no gain, and then ran in for the TD. The EP was no good and Luverne led 12-7. On the kickoff, Meyer returned the ball from the 5 to the 22. On the next play Steen's pass was picked off by Nelson and returned to the Charger 30. Two plays later the Chargers got the ball back on a fumble recovery on their own 31. Steen hit Erickson with a pass to the 38 and then again to the Cardinal 48 for a 1st. Another pass to Erickson was good for another 1st on the Luverne 38. After an incompletion, Steen hit Kuehl to the 18 fern 1st down. Steen ran the ball for 8 and then Meyer got a 1st down on the 5. Steen threw an out of bounds ball to stop the clock with 52 seconds left in the half. Meyer carried for no gain and then Steen threw the ball out of bounds again to stop the clock. On the final play of the half a pass attempt into the endzone was knocked down and the half ended with Luverne leading 12-7. Luverne kicked off to start the second half. Ben Jails took the ball on the 7 and returned it to the 34. Meyer picked up 4 and 3 then Steen hit Erickson for a 1st on the 45. Meyer got to the 46 and then a pass to Erickson was good for a 1st on the Cardinal 42, Another pass, to Bakke was good for a 1st on the 25. A personal foul against Luverne gave the Chargers another 1st on the 13. A pass to Kuehl put the ball on the 6 and Meyer took it to the 2 yard line but then the Luverne defense stiffened and on fourth down Erickson kicked a field goal to make the score 10-12. On the kickoff, the Cardinals couldn't get a handle on the ball and they were downed on their own 3 yard line. Birdsey ran for 6 and then Nelson picked up a 1st on the 15. Birdsey picked up another 1st on the 23 and then Nelson ran for a Ist down on the Charger 25 yard line. On the second play, Luverne fumbled and Dana Klontz recovered it for the Chargers on their own 35 as the third period came to an end. The Chargers were unable to pick up a 1st down and punted to the Cardinal 3 yard line. Nelson lost two yards then Lais carried for 5 and 5 to give them a fourth down and one to go on their 14 yard line. Luverne decided to go for it and Birdsey carried to the 20 and a 1st down. Lais picked up 6 and Birdsey made a 1st on the 31. Another run by Birdsey was good for another 1st on the 45. On third and 6, Nelson broke loose to the Charger 34 for another 1st. Lais and Birdsey combined for a 1st to the 24. Birdsey continued his running to another 1 st on the 10 yard line and three plays later he went into the endzone. A 2 point EP attempt by Birdsey was good and the Cardinals led 20 10. The Chargers had one more series. Starting from their 18, Boeck carried to the 21. A pass to Erickson was good to the 27 and another pass to Erickson gave them a Ist on the 40 but then time ran OUL It was a tough loss for the Chargers, but it must be remembered that the Chargers moved from Class C to Class B this year. Luverne moved from Class A to Class B, so it was a good showing for this furst year in Class B.
