(2 Corinthians I: 10) The immediate context of these verses, and of the first epistle to the Corinthians, is the comfort that only God can give. Paul wants to give con- solation to these early believ- ers in the midst of their trials. He assures them that he understands their situation for he himself has suffered great affliction. Not long before, he had been stoned in Lystra. He had been the cause of a riot in Ephesus. Paul had faced many dangers, and he understood the level of perse- cution that they faced. He speaks of the apprecia- tion he has for their prayers on his behalf. In 2 Car 1 we learn: God permits trials to come and He is in control (8); He enables us to bear our tri- als (9); He delivers us from our trials (10); and God is glorified through our trials (11). When others see what God has done, they will rejoice! God has promised: 1 will never leave you nor for- sakeyou (Heb 13:5). We can certainly apply this text to God's delivering a person from sin: past, present and future. He has delivered us from so great a death. This death speaks of the pen- alty of sin, and the deliver- ance that occurs on the day of one's salvation--the day in which one becomes born again. The moment we real- ize our lost condition, sinful and without hope, and we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our only Savior, salvation begins! We are purchased with the blood of Jesus, brought into the family of God, given a home in heaven, and delivered from the pen- alty of sin. That penalty is an eternity in the lake of free, which because of Christ, we no longer have to face. The Present: He does deliver us. This speaks of the power of sin. For those who have placed their faith in Christ Jesus alone, every day is a day of deliverance. Our precious Lord Jesus delivers us from temptation, trouble, worry, sorrow, fear, and most important, the power of sin. A careful study of Romans 6-8 will enlighten us as to the Spirit's ability to help the believer live a victorious life. The future: He will yet deliver us. This speaks of the presence of sin. One glorious day, our wonderful Savior will take us to heaven. We will be forever with the Lord. There will be no more sor- row, pain, suffering, tempta- tion, or worry. Those who possess this great assurance in Christ can offer hope and assurance to those around them. Many, many people are without the hope of the for- giveness of sin, eternal life and God's continued pres- ence. We need to share that great hope with others; and if you do not possess this hope, it can be yours today. Repent and believe the Gospel. www.ibcwestbrook.org Lutheran Social Service seeks adoptive parents Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota Adoption: JOin us to learn about exciting opportunities and changes in adoption.
