Pause... and Consider By Pastor Rob Adams An Appeal for Strength And now LORD, what do I wait for? My hope is in thee. (Psalm 39:7) The background to this psalm is that David was facing some kind of trouble from the Lord because of his sin. Neither the trouble nor the sins are specifically stated. It is amazing that this almost dirge-like psalm was to be used in public worship. David records four stages through which he progressed in overcoming his difficult experience. First, he was silent. He had a broken heart (1-3). I said, I will take heed to my ways; that I do not sin with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. I was dumb with silence, I held mypeace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. My heart was hot within me; while I was musing the fire burned," then I spoke with my tongue. He was grieved because God's stroke was heavy upon him. Though he was tempted to complain to God, and to speak out, he did not wish to do so in front of the wicked, lest he be a poor testimony. There is a time to speak, and a time to be silent, and wise is the person who knows the difference. Second, he was dependent. He had a burdened heart (4-6). LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: truly, every man at his best state is altogether van- ity. Selah. Surely every man walks in a vain show; surely they are disquieted in vain: he heaps up riches, and does not know who shall gather them. David bore his silence as long as he could. He finally prayed: make me to know my end. He is burdened about his own life and how frail it is. He knew that life was short and passes swiftly. Sadly, for many people, life empty. Third, he was confident. He had a believing heart (7). And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in thee. This is the central verse, or turning point of the Psalm. The cloud is lifting as David recognizes God's hand upon him. If life is short, he wanted to give himself to and live for the Lord. Finally, he was repentant. He had a broken heart (8-13). Deliver me from all my transgressions: do not make me the reproach of the foolish. I was dumb; I did not open my mouth, because you did it. Remove your stroke away from me; I am consumed by the blow of your hand. When you with rebukes correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth; surely every man is vanity. Selah. Hear my prayer, 0 LORD, and give ear to my cry; do not hold your peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with you, and a sojourn- er, as all my fathers were. 0 spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more. Note that he was a stranger with God, but longs that this not be so. David speaks first as a sinner, asking for forgiveness (8, 9). He speaks next as a sufferer, asking for healing (10, 11). Finally, he speaks as a sojourner, asking for strength for the rest of the journey (12, 13). Do you think that God gave heed to his tears and prayers? Our sojourn on earth may be brief and filled with pain and sorrow, but it can be a wonderful journey if we know the Lord and walk with Him. One day we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever! What a contrast to those who refuse the Lord and must forever suffer for their own sins. www.ibcwestbrook.org The following concemed & responsible citizens and businesses support the messages churches and their activities.
