The birth and the events surrounding it can only be described as story of tragedy. A son was born to her and David out of wed- lock, and then the child died. David eventually took Bath- Sheba to be his wife and comforted her in her sorrow and then God gave to them a second son. Thi s is the story of this second son, and it is a story of triumph. Though the marriage of David and Bath-Sheba began in shame, it was sanc- tified by the God of grace. The second son born to this union was double-named. David gave to him the name Solomon, which means peaceable. God, through the prophet Nathan, gave him the name Jedidiah, which means beloved of the LORD. This is very helpful in giving us an understanding of the lovingkindness of the LORD. Solomon was the son chosen of the LORD to succeed David on the throne of Israel. In all of the Scriptures there is no condemnation of Bath-Sheba. She remained with David the rest of his life, and bore him four sons. When it was time to name a successor to the throne, David became lax. He allowed his eldest living son, Adonijah, to have his way in his plans to become king. It was Bath-Sheba, along with Nathan the prophet, who reminded David that Solomon was the chosen of the LORD. This prompted David to awake out of his lethargy and anoint Solomon as the new king. Solomon became King of Israel. Twenty one years after God took her first son. the second son of Bath- Sheba was crowned King of the land. anointed of the LORD. God is surely a God of grace and mercy. Only He could have conceived such a reversal of blessing for this good woman. Bath-Sheba was greatly honored during the ~eign of Solomon. She was acknowl- edged as the Queen Mother. It is wonderful m see the treatment she received. He treated her with the defer- ence and respect that She deserved, while at the same time exercising rule as was his right. Bath-Sheba is honored in the lineage of the Messiah. She is one of only four women mentioned in Jesus' genealogy (the others being Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth). There are some important lessons that we can learn from the life of Bath-Sheba. First. God is a God of judg- ment there is the law of sowing and reaping She and David paid a high price for David's lust. Second, God is omniscient--we learn from the words of Scripture: be sure your sin will find you out. Third, God is gracious-- He is the God of second chances. It is never too late to come to Him and acknowl- edge Him as Lord and Savior. You can come co this gracious God through His Son, the Lord Jesus. ibcwbmn@centurytel.net 000000000000000000000 " Sentinel Tribune Tip Line " If you see news happening or have a story idea call our News Tip Line. 274-6136 or . 1-800-410-1859 Due to staff limitations we may not always be able to respond to your tips or ideas.
