Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength because of your enemies, that you may silence the enemy and the avenger. (Psalm 8:1, 2) This psalm of David was written as a presentation of the majesty of God. Several wonderful truths about the one true and living God are presented by the sweet psalmist of Israel. First, God is sovereign. We see this in our opening verses as He is referred to as Lord. He is in control of the weather, the seasons, the rise and fall of nations. God does what He pleases in earth and heaven. Second, God is eternal. Again we see this in the opening verses in that He is referred to as LORD. You might recall that when this is in all capitals, it is referring to Jehovah, the Great I AM. He is, has been, and always will be the same, praise His holy name. Third, God is glorious. Again we f'md our reasoning from the first verse as His name is said to be excellent--magnifi- cent, majestic. His name is to be praised in all the earth, and one glorious day it will be (Rev 1:13-18). Fourth, God is powerful. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him? (3, 4) He is the Creator of the entire universe. The work of His fingers speaks of the ease with which He made all things; with delicacy and detail. For example, almost one million different sea creatures have been cataloged by our scientists. Fifth, God is caring. Out of the entire universe, He is mind- ful of man. He visits man--this involves close inspection that is loving, and constant. This unique psalm also conveys truths regarding the con- trasting frailty of man. The psalmist asks--What is man? In relation to the entire universe, man is a mere tiny speck. And yet man has been created with dignity. For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and have crowned him with glory and honor (5). This dignity comes from man being made in the image of God. Yes, man is less than God, and less than even the angels, but he has been given glory and honor--attri- butes of royalty. Among other things, 'the image of God' means that man is a moral creature, he has an everlasting spirit, the power of emotion, and a will. To man God has given dominion. You have made him to have dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet; all sheep and oxen--even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the sea (6, 7). He has dominion over animals and all nature: trees, minerals, space, and the atomic structure. Above all things, man is the agent through which God has fulfilled His promise to send a Redeemer. God's image and man's dominion were defaced by the fall. The Lord Jesus Christ, the God-Man, conquered death, sin, and the curse at the cross when He arose! Through Him, and Him alone, we can have eternal dominion and honor! ....... ,, ,, 0 LORD, our Lord, how excellent is your ame in;fiil,e earth (9). www.ibcwestbrook.org Regional w(),ship service planned for Lutheran congregati()ns Members of several area Lutheran Churches will be gathering for a joint wor- ship service on Sunday, November 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, Minnesota. This fund supports clergy who work in smaller congregations, often at a lower rate of compensation than is available in a larger congregation. Kent Mickelson of Lakefield will direct a mass choir anthem during the worship service. Refreshments in the church fellowship hall will follow the service. All are wel- come to attend. This service is one of four events in the Southwestern Minnesota Synod and several more are being held throughout the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
