And He said unto him, Why do you call me good? There is none good but God." but if you will enter into life, keep the command- ments. (Matt 19:16, 17) From reading the three accounts of this incident (in Matthew, Mark, and Luke) we learn that the man was a rich young ruler. He rushed forward, anxious to speak to Jesus, and he knelt before the Lord, showing proper respect. He came to Jesus willing to listen and learn, but sadly, he made the wrong choice. This man referred to Jesus as Good Master. What did he mean by this? He thought of Jesus as a benevolent teacher. Yet He challenged the young ruler's use of this title because it was flattery, and the young man did not truly know what he was saymg. Jesus answered the question in this way: And He said unto him, Why do you call me good? There is none good but God. Our Lord's reply surprisingly did not focus on salvation. Rather, he forced the youth to focus on the words that he had used: Good Master. He challenged the young man in regard to his notions about God. In other words, Jesus was saying: Only God is good Do you believe that I am good, and therefore that I am God? Jesus did not wish merely to be classified with the many 'good teachers,' but to equate Himself with the Father. If Jesus is 'one of many," than his words are not very important. But if Jesus is God, than the youth had best take heed to what He says! This rich man had all that one could wish, yet he sensed that something was missing in his life. In asking the question, What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life, the man obviously thought that salvation was by works and not by faith. This belief came from the Pharisees and not from the Bible. God's Word declares: Not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us (Titus 3:5a). Jesus then said: If you will enter into life, keep the command- ments. Why did Jesus bring up the commandments? Can one enter heaven by obeying the commandments? Jesus brought the commandments up, not so that the youth could earn eternal life, but that so he would know that he needed eternal life. The Law is a mirror that reveals what we are (James 1:22). It is a teacher that brings us to Christ (Gal 3:24). If one is going to have eternal life, he must be in line with God's revealed will. His faith must be in the finished work of Christ at Calvary alone. Jesus final words to him were: lfyou would be perfect, go sell what you have. and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. This might sound strange to our ears. The tragedy of the rich young ruler was that he had everything which would permit or promote content- ment of soul, yet failed to realize his deepest need. He could not give up his earthly treasures for what Jesus offered. Therefore, he went away sorrowful, and it appears as though Jesus was sorrowful too, for the young man went away lost. Jesus is the Good Master because-He is God! To the believer, and the believer alone, Jesus is indeed a Goo&Master. Is He your Master? If not, trust in Him and you will fred that He is good!
