[ pastor Mike Stangeland ,Sunday, January 1 Worship 9:00 a.m. Rent in the Classified Sentinel Ph. 274-6136 " or 1-800-410- 1859 I I By Pastor Rob Adams Why Study Genesis? In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) We have been considering the first three chapters of Genesis over the past several months. Currently we are amidst our look at Genesis 2. Next time we will be looking at the special Garden God planted for Adam and Eve. Why are we taking so much time tO focus on such a small part of the Bible? Simply put, a belief in Creation, a literal six- day Creation, is foundational to faith. If the first three chapters of Genesis are myth or allegory, then the rest of the Bible is in question. One can truly ask, as did Pilate, 'what is truth?' A recent article in World Magazine (12.05.16) by Julie Borg, points out the impact that a belief in evolution has on one's thinking in other areas. She writes, "Since Charles Darwin first published his theory of evolution in 1859, his ideas have gained widespread acceptance, particularly in academia and secular science. But has this acceptance seeped down to the general public and subtly lured people away from faith in God? According to a new Discovery Institute survey, it has." Borg says that two facets of evolution have had the great- est impact. The first is Darwin's idea that life sprang from an unguided process in which inorganic chemicals evolved into living organisms. This makes the existence of God seem less probable. The second impacting facet of evolution is the theory that all life-forms on Earth, including humans, were produced by an unguided process of mutation and natural selection. This leads to the idea that there is no design, purpose, or good and evil. Evolution also appears to have had a huge effect on Current thinking about the place of humans in the natural order. It shows humans are not fundamentally different from animals. According to Borg, an alarming 45% of the general population believes this! But are people lured away from faith in God by evolution- ary ideas, or do people reject faith in God first and then come to endorse ideas of evolution? It's not clear which comes first. "When individuals, churches, denominations, or institutions of Christian higher education begin to adopt a more figurative interpretation of the creation story, they often begin down a slippery slope that leads to denying the authority and iner- rancy of the rest of the Bible. When those who believe in God adopt evolutionary beliefs, it suggests that God is at most incrementally involved in creation, if not simply sitting back and watching things unfold. Ultimately there is no need, and no real place for God in a complete evolutionary worldview." The belief in evolution thus has a profound effect on one's thinking. It impacts how one views the rest of Scripture, and one's outlook on morals and human behavior. Ultimately, if the Bible is not true about what it says about a six-day creation, then how can we trust the rest of what it says? If the Bible is not true, then who is Jesus, and what hope do we have of eternal life? It.really is a matter of life and death. There is a hell to shun, and a heaven to gain. Jesus died for you. Come to Him, bow before Him, take Him at His word, trust in Him, and He will save, forgive, and change you. But as many as received him, to them he gave the authority to become the sons of God, even them who believe on his name.
